What part of the NWH script could have possibly concerned Andrew Garfield? There were many memorable returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home, including Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. It was rumored that Garfield would make an appearance. However, he was kept a secret from the public until after the film had premiered worldwide. However, when he was asked about his appearance, Garfield made headlines.

Garfield’s return was officially confirmed by No Way Home, putting an end to months of back and forth with reporters. He admitted that lying about his appearance was both stressful and enjoyable. Marvel’s most outspoken actor has now revealed more details about the upcoming threequel.

Andrew Garfield acknowledged his gratitude for the opportunity to play Peter Parker again after a seven-year hiatus. Furthermore, he also said that returning to the role gave him a “feeling of closure”. Additionally, the actor revealed some interesting tidbits about the film. These include his improvised line and his beautiful moment with Zendaya’s character MJ. Earlier this week, Garfield gave another interview in which he talked about the MCU threequel.

Josh Horowitz invited Andrew Garfield to appear on his podcast, The Happy Sad Confused, to discuss his concerns about the script for NWH.

While acknowledging that they “kind of beat [him] to it” regarding the journey of his Peter Parker, Garfield praised the fact that they were “very open” about their involvement in NWH’s script development:

“That’s so interesting. The great writers kind of beat me to it.  That was their first pitch. We like the idea of you… they’re very open.”

That was one of Garfield’s initial concerns about No Way Home. However, the actor quickly realized that Peter had to begin by acknowledging his grief over Gwen’s death. The Marvel actor noted that by saying that this approach “gives [him] a little bit of a journey to go on” in the movie:

“We like the idea of you having to have cut your heart cut off from [Gwen]… that’s what I understood anyway. That you have to cut your heart of [Gwen] in order to carry on doing the job of Spider-Man. That was the kind of [the] base note. I thought that’s really, really interesting, and then my concern with that was, ’I don’t want to be…’ That gives me a little bit of a journey to go on. One of my main impotencies to be part of this is I want to have fun and I wanted it to be joyful. And then I thought, well actually then, that’s actually a great place to start from.”

Spider-Man’s Origin Story

Continuing the conversation, the ASM actor spoke about Peter Parker and Spider-Man’s connection. He further points out that the latter doesn’t exist without the former’s heart. “This was on my mind while filming,” Garfield revealed to the writers after the filming had wrapped.

“And it gives me this big hunger for connection actually, and especially for this brother connection across universes. And then I started going, if I cut my heart off, if I cut Peter Parker off, then it means my Spider-Man-ing would be suffering too. Actually, Spider-Man doesn’t exist without the heart of Peter Parker. So I was just taking that logic to the writers and I kind of ran with it, expanded it, And then, yeah, it was just a lot of finessing and fine-tuning.”

A “f*cking Spider-Man support group” tries to save their brother from the abyss,” Garfield says of director Jon Watts’ rooftop scene with the three Peter Parkers in No Way Home. Another “brilliant reversal” for the MCU comes from Tom Holland, who says Tom Holland’s film is actually his “origin story.”

“Pretty great coup de théâtre that Jon Watts pulls off in that rooftop scene where it’s just a f*cking Spider-Man support group trying to save their brother from the abyss. That sh*t’s, cool. It felt very very powerful because, obviously, what Tom’s Peter Parker is going through at that moment is the heaviest stuff that he’s going through as a character. It’s his origin story that just so happened in the third film, which is another brilliant reversal, kind of irreverent undercutting of the usual formula. This is why this film is done brilliantly.”

It’s clear that Andrew Garfield has a deep and abiding love for Spider-Man. A look at what he has to say makes it clear that he still has a soft spot in his heart for the character of Spider-Man, even after all these years.

The fact that Garfield worked on the script with the NWH writers shows just how dedicated he is to the character. One of Garfield’s many tributes to the Spider-Man character is his statement that “Spider-Man does not exist without the heart of Peter Parker.”

Given Garfield’s kinship with the other Peter Parkers, it’s only natural that he’d want to have a good time. That Gwen Stacy’s death was acknowledged in the threequel was a fitting tribute to the tragic chapter in Peter Parker’s life. From the emotional rooftop scene to the final battle, Peter’s journey was established by Garfield’s Peter. As the actor has stated, it appears that a significant portion of the show’s success was due to his close working relationship with the writers.

Some fans were surprised by Garfield’s statement that NWH served as the character’s origin story in Holland’s MCU trilogy. To put it another way, the MCU’s “brilliant reversal” is what sets it apart from previous Spider-Man films. Spider-Man 4 and other upcoming films get a new perspective on the character’s journey because of this.

Holland’s previous comment about becoming Spider-Man rather than Spider-Boy fits with this as well. Peter Parker in the movie was developed by Garfield. This of course is a good sign for his future roles as the web-slinger. Finally, this also sets a good precedent for his future appearances as the character.
