Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 brings the team back together after the events of Avengers: Endgame, but fans were left wondering how Gamora was back and whether she would join the team again. This post contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Gamora’s Survival In Avengers: Endgame

Zoe Saldana’s Gamora was sacrificed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War in exchange for the Soul Stone. However, in Avengers: Endgame, the 2014 version of Gamora from before she met the Guardians of the Galaxy appeared and traveled with Thanos to the present day. While Tony Stark snapped away Thanos and his army, Gamora curiously survived, allowing her to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

2014 Gamora vs. Original Gamora

James Gunn Reveals Gamora Almost Died Before Infinity War

The 2014 version of Gamora that emerged during Avengers: Endgame has never met her found family and has no memory of her experiences with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Therefore, she is seeking her own path with the Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. She reluctantly joins the Guardians in their mission but chooses to go back to her new Ravager family by the end of the film. While the original Gamora bonded with the other members of the Guardians team, the MCU’s new Gamora is a very different character and is shown to be much less compassionate and more abrasive.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 primarily focused on Rocket’s life being saved and his origins at the hands of the High Evolutionary being explored, the fractured relationship between Gamora and the Guardians of the Galaxy was also touched on. Theories prior to the film’s release suggested that Gamora could join the team permanently, but this did not come to fruition, as this version seems to fit in better with the Ravagers.

Gamora’s Perfect Ending

Peter Quill mentioned that Gamora survived Tony Stark’s snap due to unknowable complications from the Soul Stone, and it’s reasonable that she was spared as she’d already switched allegiances when the snap happened. While the version of Gamora now residing in the MCU is not the one audiences got to know over a number of years, Vol. 3 marks the perfect ending of her story. Gamora’s reluctant adventure with the team in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 did allow her to appreciate and learn to respect her former friends and allowed Quill to receive some closure following Gamora’s sudden and unexpected death in Avengers: Infinity War.
