According to many Marvel fans and commentators, Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch is the film’s main villain in Doctor Strange 2. Director Sam Raimi, on the other hand, believes that while this is partially true, it is actually more complicated.

If Raimi, in an interview with Fandango, had to pick one main villain from the Multiverse of Madness, it would be Wanda, Karl Mordo, Dr. Stephen Strange, or the multiverse itself (all played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Benedict Cumberbatch, respectively).

“Well, there’s iterations of our characters throughout the multiverse. “So, if I were to say Strange… I’m not really supposed to answer this question, but I might be saying altered Strange. Same with Wanda and Mordo. But I would say, at different times, all of the above.”

Fans have been wary of Wanda since Disney+’s WandaVision, which didn’t exactly portray the character in the best light. While the two appear to be working together in the Multiverse of Madness, it appears that the Scarlet Witch is at odds with the former Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel. “You become a hero when you defy the rules. What I do will make me the enemy, Wanda tells Strange. In my opinion, “That’s not fair.”

It has also been revealed that an evil, multiverse version of Strange will be a major antagonist in the film. Because of the events of the Disney+ animated series What If…?, MCU fans are no strangers to evil Strange variations at this point.

Another villain to watch out for is Mordo, a former ally of Doctor Strange’s in the first film. Mordo was hinted at as the main villain of the sequel in the film’s post-credits scene in 2016, but a lot has happened in the MCU since then. As a result of all of this, it should come as no surprise that the question of who “the bad guy” is in Multiverse of Madness is anything but clear.

A synopsis for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness reads the following:

“In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.”
