The year 2023 has been far from Marvel Studios’ most successful. Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania underperformed, Secret Invasion faced severe backlash, and The Marvels is heading towards becoming one of the biggest box office disappointments in history. With these setbacks, doubts about the Marvel brand’s future and the tenure of studio boss Kevin Feige have emerged.

Joanna Robinson, an insider and co-author of the recent Marvel Studios tell-all book, shared her perspective on Kevin Feige’s future during an interview on Matthew Belloni’s podcast The Town. Robinson emphasized that Feige’s true passion lies in “making movies” and that he wants to have a direct hand in the filmmaking process. While there was speculation about Feige potentially taking on a larger role within Disney, Robinson believes he is more inclined towards film production.

Belloni mentioned the possibility of Feige taking over Lucasfilm, to which Robinson concurred, suggesting that Feige’s affinity for Star Wars might make this transition plausible. However, she clarified that they weren’t implying that Kathleen Kennedy, the current head of Lucasfilm, should step down.

Despite the speculation, Robinson ultimately believes that Kevin Feige is more likely to remain at Marvel Studios, especially if no significant changes occur at Lucasfilm. She noted that Feige has been overseeing numerous MCU projects, even though he’s not as involved in day-to-day operations as he once was.

Addressing Marvel’s Challenges

In light of recent uneven releases in the MCU, there is a growing consensus that the studio should prioritize quality over quantity and take a more measured approach to its projects. Despite The Marvels’ struggles at the box office, many acknowledge its entertainment value. However, external factors such as waning Marvel interest, a finicky audience, and an actors’ strike during its release contributed to its underperformance.

Nevertheless, Marvel Studios has the potential to bounce back. Critically acclaimed projects like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Loki Season 2 have shown that the MCU can still deliver quality content. With Deadpool 3 in the pipeline, featuring beloved characters like Deadpool and Wolverine, Marvel Studios is poised for a resurgence.

While the MCU faces challenges, it’s important not to underestimate its ability to adapt and thrive, making necessary course corrections to maintain its position as a dominant force in the world of superhero cinema.
