Lucasfilm’s new official timeline for the Star Wars franchise includes a spot for The Old Republic, an era that doesn’t currently have any canon stories. Although many beloved entries into the franchise, such as Knights of the Old Republic, are now Legends, some aspects of the Old Republic have been carried over to Disney’s new Canon. Here’s what we know and what we can speculate about a possible Old Republic project.

What Is Canon From The Old Republic?

Darth Revan, a fan-favorite Sith character, has been mentioned in the Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary and Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith. Other lore carryovers are slim but include the crossguard lightsaber hilt design used by Kylo Ren, a blaster added to Star Wars Battlefront II, Yavin-4’s place in ancient Sith lore, and other small tidbits.

What Could An Old Republic Project Focus On?

The Mandalorian Season 3 Finale: A Roller Coaster Of Emotions

The Mandalorian War and the Sith Lords are two of the most significant events in the Old Republic that could be explored in a new project. The Mandalorian War could be a way to transition fans into a new era, given the current prevalence of Mandalorian culture and characters in Star Wars stories. Meanwhile, Sith characters like Darth Revan or Nihilus are highly regarded by fans and could be next on Lucasfilm’s list after Thrawn’s inclusion in official canon.

What About James Mangold’s Movie?

James Mangold’s upcoming movie focused on the very first Jedi Order could also pave the way for a sequel that explores the origins of the Sith. Although the events of the Old Republic explained how the Jedi came to be, they are far removed from the central timelines of the same iconic era. Mangold’s story is at its own spot prior to the Old Republic on Lucasfilm’s new timeline, suggesting that the filmmaker and the company are looking to chart their own course.

Despite the lack of canon stories, the Old Republic is still cherished by many fans, and it’s strange that it has taken this long for an impending Old Republic project to become a real possibility. Bioware’s massively successful Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is still going strong today and even released a new Sith-focused expansion pack early last year. The beloved Knights of the Old Republic RPG is also being remade, although rumors suggest that the project is facing some issues behind the scenes.

Whether there’s a secret plan for the Old Republic or not, the timeline’s popularity among Star Wars fans ensures that it won’t be forgotten. A new project focused on the Mandalorian War or the Sith Lords could be an exciting opportunity to explore a beloved era in the franchise. James Mangold’s movie could be a perfect stepping stone into a proper exploration of the fan-favorite time in Star Wars history.
