The latest trailer for the much-anticipated Disney+ series, Secret Invasion, has hinted at the current status of the Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) after the end of the Infinity Saga.

A World Without The Avengers

Although the MCU has produced an entire phase of movies since Avengers: Endgame, the titular team has not reassembled since the movie’s climax. Despite smaller subgroups working together and the team being referenced several times, none of Phase 4’s films have seen Earth’s Mightiest Heroes fighting as a cohesive unit. Kevin Feige teased at D23 last year that “there currently is a world without the Avengers,” leading fans to wonder if the team has disbanded, at least temporarily, in the MCU.

Corroborating The Claim

The latest trailer for Secret Invasion appears to corroborate Kevin Feige’s statement. Around one minute into the trailer, Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) can be seen reading a newspaper about the Attack on New York. An agent in the background then asks, “Where are the Avengers?” The trailer then cuts to Fury himself, saying cryptically that “this war is one I have to fight. Alone.” While not a confirmation that the Avengers are disbanded, it is odd that the person who fought so hard for the team’s creation is now insisting on taking on evil alone.

Fighting Without The Avengers

Fans of the Avengers argue that Fury never fights alone, even when the team isn’t actively working together. However, if the Avengers aren’t aware of the looming threat and Fury insists on keeping this invasion a secret, then a disbanded Avengers team may not realize it’s time to reassemble once more. The premise of Secret Invasion is similar to its comic source, with an invasion of Skrulls onto Earth happening under everyone’s noses. If Fury is the only one who knows about the war, he may have to fight it without the Avengers backing him up. However, as the trailer indicates, Fury will have allies in Maria Hill, Talos, and others. Even if the Avengers are not there, Fury is never truly alone.

Future Of The Avengers In The MCU

Two more Avengers films are currently in production, making it unlikely that the team’s disbandment is permanent. The upcoming Secret Invasion series could potentially set the stage for the team’s reassembly. The MCU is known for its interconnectedness, and it’s possible that events from Secret Invasion could lead to a reunion of the Avengers. However, for now, the trailer indicates that Fury will fight alone, and the Avengers’ status remains uncertain.
