In an interview, James Cameron discussed the controversy surrounding superhero movie franchises and made a light-hearted jab at the way the MCU and DCEU handled character arcs. The director of Avatar: The Way of Water observed that, regardless of the characters’ ages, they all behave as though they are in college in these enormous, spectacular films .

Although they claim to have relationships, they don’t. Due to their children, they never hang up their mantles. The things that truly anchor us and give us strength, love, and a reason to live, Because those characters don’t go through these phases , I believe that’s not how movies should be made.

The director used the development of his characters from Avatar to Avatar 2 to set the stage for his criticisms. He emphasised that at several points in the film, both Jake Sully and Neytiri make “suicidal leaps of faith,” which he insisted Marvel and DC would never accomplish.

In a similar vein, Martin Scorsese, the filmmaker of The Wolf of Wall Street, believed that while these movies provide similar experiences to those found at theme parks, they fall short when it comes to communicating “emotional and psychological sensations to another human being.”

While James Cameron berates Marvel and DC movies for their emphasis on families, his latest movie, Avatar: The Way of Water, will centre on how Jake and Neytiri have developed along with their family, which has since expanded to include numerous children.

Before finally seeing the follow-up to Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi epic. Fans won’t have to wait for too long to see if the director can meet the high standards he’s built up over the past ten years.
