James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has debuted to amazing reviews. On the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a review percentage north of 95%. It’s the best that the DCEU has managed till now. As one might expect, after this, James Gunn has shown no signs of slowing down now.
He has new projects coming up, but his next immediate project is for the MCU. DC fans will be sad to know that for now, apart from the 2022 HBO Max Peacemaker series starring John Cena, Gunn currently doesn’t have any more projects in the DCEU.
But MCU fans will be glad to know that he will finally return to the MCU to film his long-awaited Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as well as The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
Gunn’s MCU return will be after 3 years. He hasn’t been back working with Marvel Studios or Disney after he was was released from his contract in 2018. This was due to previous offensive and inflammatory jokes that he made on social media.
But, things were resolved in the end and Disney did call him back. However, in the meantime, he had already scored a deal with WB. As such, in the end, he was working for both studios. So he really did win.
Now that he’s working with both Marvel and DC, fans are asking him if there’s a crossover possible between the two comic book giants. As per Gunn, it’s possible. He says that he has:
“talked about that to the heads of both Marvel and DC.”
If it was up to Gunn, then what kind of characters would he use for the Marvel and DC crossover? He gave a really interesting answer to this question.
In an interview with Jakes Takes, done to promote The Suicide Squad, James Gunn said that he has indeed floated the idea of a Marvel and DC crossover movie.
But the thing that surprised us was the characters he wanted in the movie. He said that he wanted the movie to star Groot and Harley Quinn.
Here’s his full quote:
“I would really be happy to do a Harley Quinn and Groot movie, that would be exciting for me. Not only have I thought about that, but I’ve actually talked about that to the heads of both Marvel and DC. They know everybody’s open to everything, but whether anything would ever happen, who knows?”
Gunn has since then clarified that his idea of a Groot and Harley Quinn crossover movie was only told to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige and that too in passing. He hasn’t actually taken up this idea with anyone at DC.
Now, we have seen characters crossover within franchises. It’s common and pretty much what drives the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But a live-action crossover between two competing studios is pretty much unheard of. But even then, it has been done in the comic books.
Know that DC and Marvel have crossed over 4 times in the comic books till now. The first one was Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man in 1976. The second one was the Marvel Treasuring Edition #28 in 1980. The third crossover was DC vs. Marvel in 1996. And the last and fourth one was in 2003 and it was titled JLA/Avengers.
Now, one might think that a Marvel and DC crossover in today’s pop-culture scenario is a no-brainer. It would be received well by fans and would be a sure-shot box office hit as well. But even if the two studios were up for such a crossover, it wouldn’t be possible. Gunn explains this by saying that:
“Whether we can ever get through the barrage, the Berlin Wall of lawyers we would need… I don’t know. But it would be a blast.”
Here’s his full quote on the matter:
“But the idea of being able to bring Marvel and DC together in a movie, that would be really fun for me. And, I know it’s exciting for even the heads of Marvel and DC to think about, Kevin Feige over at Marvel and Tobey Emmerich over at Warner Bros… It’s something we all like to dream about, whether we can ever get through the barrage, the Berlin Wall of lawyers we would need to get through to ever make something like that happen, I don’t know. But, it would be a blast.”
Gunn then talked about his dream cast for such a fantasy crossover between the two behemoths. Even though he had originally claimed that he would have liked to cast DC’s Harley Quinn and Marvel’s Groot, but the ace director then began to dream bigger.
He then transformed the duo film into an ensemble movie. Gunn said:
“Yeah, I can also really get behind a Rocket, Groot, King Shark, and Weasel movie. That would be fantastic as well.”
From Gunn’s statements, it’s clear that even though there’s interest from both the camps, but such a crossover might take some time to get done. However, Warner Bros. and Marvel have both having produced multiple comic book movies and tv shows recently. As such, right now, both the studios need to keep on inventing.
They need to keep on experimenting with their content to keep their audiences engaged and the stories fresh. And what better way than to do a mega-crossover movie?
Right now, Marvel and WB have a lot on their plates. Both of them are on the verge of releasing movies that will further explore their respective franchise’s multiverses.
On DC’s side is The Flash that will release on November 4, 2022. From Marvel, next up is Spider-Man: No Way Home. It will release in the latter half of 2021. It’s expected that the film will elaborate on the multiverse set up by the Loki series on Disney+.
Now, once both DC and Marvel explore its multiverse to the fullest, it wouldn’t be impossible to imagine that the studios would want to think about a crossover film.
The potential and scope of such a thing would excite filmmakers and actors for sure. And as we said before, the box office would bow down to that crossover.
But for now, we will have to just imagine how epic a potential crossover like that would be. Even if it happens with Harley and Groot, it’s sure to be epic. But with Marvel’s recent comments regarding Harley Quinn, will the studio agree to such a crossover? That remains to be seen.
