On Monday, Warner Bros. hosted the DCU Press Event, which provided fans with much-needed information regarding the superhero franchise’s future. James Gunn and Peter Safran, co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, present an update on the huge slate of stuff coming to the rebooted universe.
James Gunn detailed his vision for the DC Universe and put some light on speculations that Aquaman actor Jason Momoa might play Lobo. There have been reports that Jason Momoa might leave the role of Aquaman and join the new DC Universe as Lobo. However, recent statements by DC co-founder James Gunn have left fans confused.

For the past few weeks, Momoa has been vague about whether he will continue to play Aquaman in the DC Universe. On multiple occasions, he jokingly made light of the possibility that he would love to be recast as Lobo.

During the press event announcing the future DCU slate of films and TV series, James Gunn made it abundantly clear that stars from Zack Snyder’s prior cinematic universe will fit into his new creative approach with the DCU. With these remarks, it is clear that Jason Momoa will not be hanging up his lance anytime soon. However, co-CEO Peter Safran told the media that Aquaman star Jason Momoa will only be portraying one role in the rebooted DC Universe.

During a press event, Collider asked co-CEO Peter Safran if Momoa would continue to play Aquaman or Lobo in the new DC Universe. Regardless of the fact that Safron wasn’t totally settled, he stated that it is still “too early” to say anything and that “no decision has been made.”

“Jason always thought Aquaman was a trilogy in his own mind. But he also loves Lobo. He’s been very clear about that, too. He’s never gonna play two characters, but no decision has been made.”

Supporting Safran’s comments, Gunn then added, “We’ll figure that out.” James Gunn additionally emphasized that no actor will take on more than one part in the rebooted DC Universe.

“I will say we won’t have an actor playing two different roles.”

The fact that both James Gunn and Peter Safran have yet to confirm which character Momoa will continue to play in the DC Universe indicates that it is not a certainty that it will be Aquaman. Both CEOs are probably waiting to see how the audience reacts to Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. If the Aquaman sequel does poorly at the box office, like Black Adam did, it might be an indication that the two will pull the plug and Momoa will switch roles.

In 2015’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Momoa made his first appearance as Aquaman in the original DCEU. Jason was properly featured in the 2017 film Justice League. In 2018, Momoa received his own leading role in Aquaman.

It is largely up to the fans to decide if Momoa will continue to play Aquaman after Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom. If the audience loves the film, we could see Momoa wearing the same suit again.
