With hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, James Gunn has established himself as one of the most highly prized names in the world of comic book movies. The director is one of the rare few directors to have made blockbusters with both Marvel and DC, which has afforded the seasoned Hollywood professional considerable latitude in selecting his projects. The third volume of Guardians of the Galaxy is now being finished by Gunn, who “doesn’t know what’s going to happen” after that.

But if a recent claim is to be believed, it appears that fans have already learned what the director has planned after Guardians, which might be a departure from Marvel Studios.

After many reports that the filmmaker was working on DC spin-offs and a “secret feature” for the franchise, James Gunn’s future with Marvel is now even more uncertain.

According to rumours, The Guardians of the Galaxy director, is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to create a mystery movie and maybe more.

The director has previously expressed uncertainty about his involvement in future Marvel films, stating that “I’m finishing the Guardians trilogy. That’s enough space opera for me at this moment.”

Although Gunn claims to appreciate both Marvel and DC, he has recently come off as a touch burned out on the Marvel front. He has told the Guardians’ saga, and at least for the moment, he doesn’t appear overly keen on tackling any other MCU related projects.

Instead, he will have the chance to develop his own universe within the DC Extended Universe by diving deeply into the Suicide Squad spin-off characters and working on his upcoming DC projects.

The fans will be extra depressed knowing that the filmmaker would not have been approached by DC in the first place if he had not been sacked and then rehired by Marvel Studios.
