Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the final installment in the beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, has been performing exceptionally well at the box office. The film, directed by James Gunn, sees the heroes embark on their last mission together. Gunn, who is now fully dedicated to creating the new DC Universe for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios, bid farewell to the MCU with this trilogy finale. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has already amassed nearly $530 million dollars globally.
Disappointing Update On Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4
Despite the commercial success and critical acclaim, the prospects for a future Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 are uncertain. When asked on Twitter about the possibility of a fourth installment, James Gunn provided a brief but disappointing response, suggesting that there is no real chance of it happening.
Interpreting Gunn’s Words
It is important to consider that Gunn’s statement may indicate that there is “no real chance” of him directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4. It is possible that another director could take over and begin a new trilogy with the same characters, given Gunn’s commitment to running DC Studios full-time.
The Need for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 4
While the idea of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 is intriguing, the team may not necessarily require another standalone film within the MCU. Given the monumental ending of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, rushing the development of a sequel solely to maintain momentum would be unjust. Instead, integrating the new Guardians team into other MCU films and shows would be a wiser choice. Although their next appearance remains uncertain, it is reasonable to speculate that Rocket and the team will have a role in at least Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars.
Marvel’s Expanding Universe
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 might seem like a surefire addition, it is essential to remember that Marvel Studios already has numerous ongoing and upcoming franchises. While Phase 7 plans have yet to be announced, it would not be surprising if Kevin Feige has already mapped out that slate, potentially resulting in a significant delay for another Guardians of the Galaxy film. It is even plausible that Feige has plans for Phases 8 and 9, further pushing back the timeline.
The Future Of The Guardians Of The Galaxy
Only time will reveal how the MCU intends to utilize the Guardians of the Galaxy following their trilogy’s conclusion. However, it appears highly unlikely that they will never be featured again. At the very least, Star-Lord will return, as indicated by Guardians’ post-credits title screen. Until Kevin Feige unveils official plans, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 is not on the horizon anytime soon.
