Last year everyone from DC fans to Hollywood people were shocked when Henry Cavill announced that he was done playing Superman after appearing in the post-credits scene of “Black Adam” and announcing his return on social media. For long fans were clamoring to see Cavill back in the blue and red suit and while they did get their wish, it wasn’t permanent.

After Cavill’s announcement bidding goodbye to the role, fans bombarded James Gunn on social media and requested him to bring the actor back. But that didn’t happen. Since Gunn recently announced the new slate of  DCU films, the possibility of Henry Cavill returning is now zero. In the press release for the 10 new projects, the two CEOs of DC Studios clarified the Cavill situation further.

James Gunn Talks About The Henry Cavill Situation

Deadline reported that James Gunn was asked to clarify the situation surrounding Henry Cavill’s departure. He said that they didn’t fire Cavill since he wasn’t cast at all. The co-CEO also admitted that the actor was treated badly by previous WB regimes. Here’s his full statement on the matter:

“We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never cast. He was in a cameo, and that was the end of his story. A lot of people made assumptions which weren’t true. But for me, it’s about who do I want to cast as Superman and who do the filmmakers want to cast. For me, for this story, it isn’t Henry. I like Henry. He’s a great guy. I think he’s gotten dicked around by a lot of people, including former regimes of this company. But this Superman isn’t Henry for a number of reasons.”

Gunn’s statements make perfect sense. After all, the decision to bring Cavill back was completely Dwayne Johnson’s. Gunn or Safran were not involved in it. In an Instagram live, the “Black Adam” actor even said that he had to face a lot of obstacles to make that happen. But it was all for naught. Later reports also said that the Superman actor was a pawn in Johnson’s attempt to control a share of DC.

But with “Black Adam” dismal box-office numbers leading to Johnson’s departure and a new regime change bringing Peter Safran and James Gunn to the role of DC Studios CEOs, Cavill’s future was unstable. The final nail in the coffin was Gunn deciding to reboot the DC universe and start afresh.

James Gunn’s Superman movie, titled, “Superman: Legacy,” will bring in a new Superman to the new DCU. Rumors have been swirling around about Wolfgang Novogratz and Jacob Elordi being considered for the role, but James Gunn clarified that he hasn’t cast anyone and won’t do so till the script is ready.

Since the new Superman film is slated for 11th July 2025, we will hear the contenders names soon. Who will ultimately bag the coveted role remains to be seen. As for Cavill, he is busy developing the Warhammer 40K project and probably won’t be a part of the DCU in the foreseeable future.

Stay tuned for more updates.
