James Gunn broke the internet with his new slate of DCU projects. With 10 projects (5 films and 5 TV shows), DC fans have a lot to look forward to. While some projects like “Superman: Legacy” and “The Brave and The Bold” were expected, a lot of them were not. So let us take a look at the 5 projects that no one guessed about.

5. DCU’s Swamp Thing

DC did make a “Swamp Thing” TV show in 2019 but it was canceled after just one season. As such, fans didn’t think that they will get to see another project based on the same character this soon. However, it is indeed getting made with James Mangold in talks to direct it.

As per Peter Safran, the co-CEO, it will have a different tone from other projects in the slate. He also said that it will be interesting to see all the characters from various different kinds of projects come together in the future.

Regarding the movie itself, James Gunn stepped in to explain that the movie will explore the dark origins of the character. Also, maybe the Swamp Thing film will open the gates to explore other magic based DC characters like Zatanna and John Constantine.

4. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

No one speculated that we would be getting a Supergirl movie right in the first Chapter of the DCU. However, it looks like Superman will be bringing his cousin along for the ride.

Her movie is titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” and it will adapt the Tom King written and Bilquis Evely illustrated comic book of the same name. As per Gunn we will be a seeing a Supergirl who is harsher and more hardcore than any version we have seen before.

3. Paradise Lost

Before the slate was released, the DC fandom was speculating about the status of Wonder Woman in the new DCU. Gunn had confirmed that a Superman film was in development, and since Batman is DC’s crown jewel and its best selling character, so him getting a live-action project was inevitable.

The only one in question was Diana. However, fans still were sure that Wonder Woman was coming to the big screen in some way or the other. But no one could have thought that we would instead be getting a Themyscira based show that was inspired by “Game of Thrones” without Diana.

However, the Paradise Lost series sounds plenty interesting since it will explore the political intrigue of an all-women society. We will also know the power players in that society.

2. DCU’s The Authority

When the list of James Gunn’s slate of new DCU projects was announced, the mention of “The Authority” surprised many. After all, no one expected James Gunn to dig deep into the DC titles and develop the most obscure ones into live-action projects right from the first DCU era itself.

However, it’s certainly a good decision since we will get to see characters who are morally gray and don’t fall into the carefully partitioned good guys and bad guys teams. James Gunn told exactly this during the press meet for the slate release.

He also explained that The Authority will be a team who believe that it’s possible to fix the world easily, but from then onwards it’s a slippery slide for their morals. The movie will be based on Bryan Hitch and Warren Ellis’ comic series of the same name.

1. Creature Commandos

Out of all the projects announced, no one could have guessed that we were getting Creature Commandos. However, since Gunn loves D-list characters, so it makes sense for him to make a show based on them.

Also, it is the first project that will officially kickstart the DCU. It’s based on comics of the same name and is already in development with Gunn having written the seven episodes of the show himself. The show will be animated and it will bring back two characters we saw in “The Suicide Squad.”

One is Weasel and the other is Rick Flagg Sr. Casting for the show is currently underway with Gunn planning on hiring actors who can feature in a live-action adaptation as well as voice act for the animated versions of their characters.

In fact, he plans to hire actors who can do both for all the DC characters since the DCU will be connected across comics, games, animation, and video games. So having the same actor portray the character in every version will make the universe more cohesive.
