DC Studios co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have announced plans to revamp and revitalize the on-screen DC Universe. One of the properties confirmed to be in development is an animated series called Creature Commandos, which features a group of strange and monstrous protagonists.

On Twitter, James Gunn revealed that certain cast members from the DCU’s animated output will eventually transfer and crossover into its live-action properties. He confirmed that some of the Creature Commandos cast members will also appear in live-action projects.

Purpose Of Introducing Characters In Animation First

Peter Safran explained that introducing certain characters in an animated format is a good way to breathe life into heroes and villains with fantastical or outlandish designs that may be too difficult or expensive to properly render in live-action.

In addition, animation allows characters to exist in scenarios that don’t have to be as constrained by budgetary concerns. While animated projects are not exempt from budgetary concerns, they are often less expensive than live-action.

Casting For Live-Action Appearances

Gunn and Safran plan to cast just about every principal animated DCU character with live-action appearances in mind. Established movie actor Frank Grillo has been cast as Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, as he has the ability to pull off both mediums for the character.
