DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed that the Black Superman movie, featuring Val Zod, is still in development at Warner Bros. The movie will be produced by J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot and written by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Gunn clarified that the development of the Black Superman movie is not connected to his own Superman: Legacy movie, which is set to be released in 2025.
Elseworlds Tale
Gunn indicated that the Black Superman movie will be an “Elseworlds tale” similar to 2019’s Joker. Gunn also acknowledged that he hasn’t read the script for the Black Superman movie, but DC Studios executive Chantal Nong is “extremely excited” about it.

Michael B. Jordan As The Superman
The Black Panther star, Michael B. Jordan, has previously addressed rumors that he will play Val-Zod in an HBO Max project separate from the Black Superman movie. However, no solid updates have been provided regarding casting, production, shooting, or release.
Release Date
Currently, Superman: Legacy is scheduled to begin production in early 2024, with a release date set for July 11, 2025. The release date for the Black Superman movie is expected to be after the release of Superman: Legacy.
