Problems arise when trying to recreate the success of Black Panther without its star, Chadwick Boseman. In the wake of losing Boseman as Black Panther, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige and returning writer-director Ryan Coogler were left with the inconceivable job of rewriting and redoing the film.

Since this is both a follow-up to one of the MCU’s most financially successful solo films and a memorial to Boseman, it’s under a lot of pressure to live up to its predecessor’s reputation. Audiences ultimately decide whether or not a picture is successful, but the folks at Marvel Studios are feeling quite good about how this one turned out.

Marvel Boss Calls Black Panther 2 The Most Important Movie

In a Marvel Entertainment promotional video featuring Black Panther: Wakanda Forever filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said the movie “feels like the most important movie we’ve ever done”:

“All of us very much believe that this feels like the most important movie we’ve ever made. That is what every crew member focused on every day, and none more so than Ryan Coogler at the helm of it all.”

When asked about the significance of the film and how he handled it, director Ryan Coogler said, “above all, it is a relationship movie” that explores “how do you move forward after losing someone:”

“Above all, it is a relationship movie. We’ll have some incredible set pieces… But at the end of the day, I think what people are going to really remember is the conversations. How do you move forward after losing someone that meant so much to you? You have to continue their legacy.”

Many people will see Black Panther 2 because of the emotional weight of loss. The movie is a tribute to Boseman, but it’s set in a post-pandemic world where plenty of people have lost loved ones to the COVID-19 virus. In that respect, the film will connect with its audience.

Queen Ramonda and Princess Shuri are at the center of the plot, as they are tasked with charting a course ahead for Wakanda in the face of a new danger to the African nation: Namor, the Sub-Mariner, monarch of the secret underwater country of Talokan. The success of the sequel will determine the fate of the Black Panther series, regardless of how fans feel Marvel should have dealt with Boseman’s death.
