Kirsten Dunst, who portrayed the character of Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, recently opened up about her struggle with depression while filming the third installment of the series. Despite her earlier success, Dunst’s experience filming Spider-Man 3 was not a positive one.
The Monotonous Life On The Set
Dunst shared that towards the end of the shoot, she would spend most of her time just sitting in her trailer waiting for her scenes, which would last only for a brief period. She felt like she was wasting her time, and it took a toll on her, leading her to feel depressed and arduous. She shared that she was “dying in her trailer” and would often return home feeling exhausted.
Coping With Depression
During her interview, Dunst also talked about how her friend, who was also in the entertainment industry and had similar feelings towards their job, helped her cope with her depression. They would vent about their experiences and drink pinot grigio while watching American Idol. Although she was grateful to have a supportive friend, Dunst admitted that those three weeks were the worst.
A Proud Legacy
Despite her negative experience, Dunst expressed her pride in the Spider-Man trilogy and her desire to star in a fourth installment. The trilogy was the most financially successful project of her career, and it contributed significantly to her growth as an actress.
Kirsten Dunst’s experience on the set of Spider-Man 3 highlights the importance of having a supportive network to help cope with mental health struggles. While she was not able to fully enjoy the filming process, Dunst’s legacy in the Spider-Man franchise is something she can take pride in.
