Lucasfilm has reportedly decided to let go of the writer of Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Star Wars movie, set to be released in 2025. The news was confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2023, where it was announced that Ridley would reprise her role as Rey Skywalker, with the film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Initial Writer Damon Lindelof Leaves The Project

While Damon Lindelof, the creator of Watchmen, was initially brought on to write the movie, he was asked to leave due to undisclosed creative differences with the team behind the scenes. Lindelof admitted that he saw his axed script as a “true labor of love,” and while the movie will still happen, it will not be with him.

It was revealed that Lindelof was not aware that Obaid-Chinoy would be directing the film, and there was some undisclosed friction between the two creatives. Rumors have also circulated that the script for Ridley’s movie wasn’t up to the expected standard for Lucasfilm.

Although the setback is disappointing, Lindelof is “absolutely” ready to “get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again” for another future project. He even did his best Yoda impression in confirming that he’ll put forth another attempt at the right time. As this movie is seemingly next in line for Star Wars on the movie front, getting a writer hired for it soon will be of vital importance for Lucasfilm as the company looks to make a comeback to the big screen after Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker.
