Madame Web is an upcoming movie about to release in 2023. It will be directed by S. J. Clarkson with screenplay written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Shazama. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the fifth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The cast members of the movie include Dakota Johnson (as Madame Web) along with Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet who have been cast in undisclosed roles. Based on different rumors about the movie, Madame Web is set to expand Sony’s Marvel universe in an exciting way. The anticipation surrounding the movie is high, mainly due to its interesting ties to the Multiverse and its all-star cast.

Who is Madame Web?

Madame Web aka Cassandra Webb is a fictional character who made her first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 (1980). Denny O’Neil created the character for the Marvel comics. Usually depicted as an elderly woman, she serves as a supporting character in the Spider-Man comic books. She is a clairvoyant, precognitive mutant who first showed up to help Spider-Man find a kidnap victim.

Madame Web was blind. She suffered from myasthenia gravis (a kind of neural disorder), forcing her to be entirely dependent on external life support for survival.

Madame Web was a mutant who possesses psychic sensory powers including telepathy, clairvoyance, prescience, and the ability to sense the presence of psionic powers in others. She can also perform psychic surgery and appear to others in spirit (astral) form. However, when she was attacked and later killed, she was able to pass her powers of precognition as well as her blindness on to Julia Carpenter, who became the next Madame Web.

Leaks and Details for possible plot

Ever since the movie was announced by Sony Pictures, speculations were high about what the movie could be about. There have been some pictures that were released that seemingly suggested that Dakota Johnson would be playing Julia Carpenter. However, it has been revealed that Johnson is actually portraying the role of Cassandra Web. It has now also been reported that Adam Scott and Emma Roberts are playing young versions of Uncle Ben and Mary Parker, respectively, with Mary Parker being Peter Parker’s mother.

Also, it has been revealed that Sydney Sweeney will be playing Julia Carpenter (another version of Madame Webb from another universe), while Celeste O’Connor and Isabela Merced would be playing the respective roles of Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazon.

If these details are true that it teases that the film would be a prequel to the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. This would explain why Cassandra Webb is so young in the movie. If all the bits and pieces are assembled it can safely be said that the movie will see an entire team of Spider-Woman characters who will be put together by Madame Webb in order to thwart the assassination attempts of Mary Parker. And if rumors are to be believed, the movie will be in Tobey Maguire‘s Spiderman universe.

Reception to Sony’s Spiderman Universe (SSU) releases has been a mixed bag so far. Sony’s decision to make movies on Marvel Spiderman characters without including Spiderman in them has been much debated. The movies would eventually make these characters devoid of their basic villainous nature and make them much of an anti-hero. Venom (2018) was a huge success while its sequel Venom: Let there be carnage (2021) received mixed reviews. Morbius (2022) starring Jared Leto was a beautiful disaster, crowning it to be the worst-reviewed Marvel movie ever.

With no official announcements being made yet from the studio or any of the cast members, all of this has to be taken with a grain of salt. But with release dates of both Kraven: The Hunter and Madame Webb rapidly approaching, official announcements or some footage will be released soon.

Madame Webb is currently set to make its debut in theaters on October 6, 2023.
