House of the Dragon has dominated social media conversation from its release and now it’s dominating charts with its viewership numbers. In both areas, it has surpassed Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power completely. As per newly released numbers, more than 1 billion minutes of the Game of Thrones prequel series has been viewed in just a week! Read more below:

Nielsen has released its Streaming Top 10 chart for the week of October 17- October 23. And House of the Dragon has found a spot in it with more than a billion viewed minutes on HBO Max. Note that since the Dragon show aired on Sundays at 9 p.m. and was released simultaneously on the streaming platform, so the first few hours of the release of the season 1 finale (that aired on October 23) was included in the figures above.

So once Nielsen releases the viewership numbers for the week of October 24- October 30, we will get to see how House of the Dragon has faired in the week post its finale. But its current numbers are nothing to scoff at. It has bagged the 3rd spot on the list, eclipsed only by ‘The Watcher’ and ‘The School for Good and Evil’, which have 2,595 billion minutes and 1,058 billion minutes watched respectively. Meanwhile Amazon Prime Video’s “The Rings of Power” wasn’t found anywhere on it.

The Lord of the Rings prequel series dropped out the chart completely just a week after it finished airing the final episode of its first season. However, during its finale week it did score 1.1 billion viewed minutes. And before the week of October 17- October 23, the show had indeed overtaken House of the Dragon on Nielsen’s streaming charts. Impressively, it had done so for a total of six weeks out of the seven, when both the shows were putting out new episodes.

Also, comparing the two shows on data alone shows that we are comparing Apples to Oranges. For one, both have different airing schedules and they are differently formatted. Also, their episode counts are different. House of the Dragon boasts of 10 while Rings of Power only has 8. So the George R.R. Martin’s Dragon show gets a boost in minutes viewed.

However, House of the Dragon fans don’t need to be bummed. Variety reveals that about one-third of the show’s viewership comes from people who watch it through HBO’s cable channel rather than through steaming on HBO Max. So this Nielsen number doesn’t encompass its complete viewership. This means that House of the Dragon’s cumulative numbers would be much higher.

But it remains to be seen if the show has staying power and can cling on to the chart in its finale week.

Stay tuned for more news.
