The Mandalorian Season 2’s cataclysmic ending was explored in one episode of The Book of Boba Fett, which brought back Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in a big way. In the sixth episode of the show, Hamill reappeared among a slew of other surprising characters, including Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka, Grogu, and Pedro Pascal’s Din Djarin. Fans reacted positively to the surprise appearances, which quickly became trending topics on social media.

Among all the cameos, Luke’s unexpected return is one of the most talked-about. Graham Hamilton, an actor and voice artist, was credited as the Jedi’s “Performance Artist” throughout the episode, and he described it as “one of the most amazing and satisfying creative experiences” of his life, according to Star Wars. A report also disclosed how Luke Skywalker’s voice was developed, leaving fans to speculate on how much Hamill was engaged in the production of The Book of Boba Fett. More information on Hamill’s role in the Disney+ series has now been released.

Lucasfilm revealed that Mark Hamill was there throughout the filming of the Disney+ series while also sharing further details about his role in the current episode of Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, which was released early in South Korea. Hamill and Luke’s stand-in, Graham Hamilton, confessed that the procedure is “new” to them, so they’re just “trying to give the filmmakers everything they need.” His comeback was described as a “composite performance” by the Luke Skywalker actor:

“We’re just trying to give the filmmakers everything they need because it’s a new process for both of us.” I’ve worked in theatre, radio, television, and film. Each one has its own set of criteria. This, on the other hand, is an entirely new aspect. It’s a composite performance with this. Not only from the stunt double, but also from the director’s input and what’s on the script, all of these aspects combining to make it a constant learning experience.”

Dave Filoni, director and executive producer of The Book of Boba Fett, said that having Hamill on site is “critical,” because it means so much to the Star Wars legend:

“Having Mark there is crucial, because you understand how much it matters to him.” This individual. You can see it in his eyes when he would watch Graham [Hamilton] play, this sense of pride, I believe, that he felt in watching such a devoted performance and knowing that he was a part of it.”

Hamill and Hamilton “really had to fuse” to make the sequences work for the show, according to Filoni:

“Mark and Graham had to actually fuse and become Luke, and Mark had to impart everything he knew about what it meant to be Luke.” “It’s just something really meaningful for all of us.”

The show’s director of photography, David Klein, offered a thorough breakdown of Hamill’s time on set:

“We’d do takes with Mark, then Graham, and it was always one camera because we had a flux setup on our camera, which is simply two small IR cameras on either side of our capturing lens… Graham’s face is covered in invisible infrared dots. Some are visible, while others are not. It also works quite well. Mark, on the other hand, owns that character.”

More stills from the episode show Hamill’s return to Star Wars. Hamill is seen taking a break from filming, and Grogu appears to be exhausted as well. The Star Wars hero previously stated that reprising his role as Luke Skywalker was “almost a responsibility” for him, and that he couldn’t say no if asked. The actor’s most recent appearance in The Book of Boba Fett is proof of his prior claim, as he once again demonstrates his love for the franchise.

It’s fitting that the behind-the-scenes collaboration between the performers and The Book of Boba Fett’s team worked smoothly, especially considering the tremendous work required to pull together Luke Skywalker’s unexpected reappearance.

Rosario Dawson earlier stated that she was “freaking out” and “still pinching [herself]” that she had the opportunity to work with Hamill, and the stills shown above prove it. For many Star Wars fans, seeing Ahsoka and Luke in a live-action series was a dream come true, and Dawson’s star-struck reaction reveals that she, too, is a diehard fan.

Given the length of time it took to bring Luke back, it’s unclear whether the character will make any more appearances in the near future. However, Hamill’s openness, combined with Lucasfilm’s commitment to bringing more Jedi Master stories to the screen, should be more than enough cause to keep hoping for a return of the character.
