Marvel’s upcoming project is Benedict Cumberbatch’s second solo film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With a couple months remaining for its theatrical release, the promotional activities are in motion. Clearly, fans’ excitement is only increasing day by day. Recently, a new image has surfaced on social media. And it appears as if the MCU fandom is torn. The image, however unclear and of low resolution, reveals Tom Cruise in motion capture. And he is doing his best to present an alternate reality version of Tony Stark.
The person in the image is not immediately recognizable. But he resembles Tom Cruise. And he is sporting the same beard as Tony Stark’s comic book and movie versions. However, the entire thing could just be fake.
Marvel fans are not willing to believe this. One user writes, “It doesn’t match the suits they wore on set. Also the lighting on his face doesn’t match his body.”

Another user just won’t accept anybody else putting on the Iron Man suit. Even Tom Cruise isn’t an exception. “I know I’m late to the panic but don’t you ever show us tom cruise playing iron man I’d rather not see Tony Stark ever again,” the tweet read.
It is totally possible that the image is fake. But considering the many times such blurry images have made it to social media, the final cut of Marvel movies have revealed the leaks to be surprisingly accurate.
Benedict Cumberbatch will star in his standalone project as the titular sorcerer. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness explores the greater depths of the Multiverse. The film’s trailer has teased an evil version of Doctor Strange, Strange Supreme. This variant closely resembles the version from the MCU animated series What If…?.
Considering this, there are chances that in a different universe, there is another Tony Stark. Marvel’s last project, Spider-Man: No Way Home brought back the Spideys from the Multiverse, played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In fact, there were reports that suggested that even before Robert Downey Jr. suited up as Tony Stark, Marvel was considering Tom Cruise for the role. However, the star refused the production because he did not think that it would work.
Back in 2005, Tom Cruise opened up about the topic to IGN, and said.
“It’s not happening. Not with me, no … They came to me at a certain point and, when I do something, I wanna do it right. If I commit to something, it has to be done in a way that I know it’s gonna be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn’t feel to me like it was gonna work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be, and it just didn’t go down that road that way.”
So, even if Tom Cruise will portray Tony Stark for the upcoming project, the role will acknowledge a previous casting that was never brought to life. Some creative Marvel fans have tried fabricating Tom Cruise’s version of Tony Stark on paper. Just to get a better look at what the iteration would turn into. With that said, the possibility of Cruise becoming Iron Man in a parallel universe cannot entirely be dismissed. Especially when the Mission: Impossible franchise is weakening, and is on the verge of ending after a couple films.
