Marvel Zombies were introduced in ‘What If…?’ as one of the alternate universes set inside the limits of the MCU. The event takes place weeks before Avengers: Infinity War. Here, Hope Van Dyne’s attempt to bring her mother Janet Van Dyne’s home from the Quantum Realm went wrong. Janet was afflicted by a quantum virus that transformed her into a flesh-eating zombie. This tragedy ultimately contributed to the Earth’s annihilation.

Tony Stark, Doctor Strange, and the Scarlet Witch were among the undead in the last ‘What If…?’ installment. Meanwhile, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Bucky led the party of survivors that aimed to take them down. That backstory was woven throughout the episode’s zombie action and tear-jerker moments. This eventually made for a really satisfying viewing experience. There’s a fresh rumor floating around that suggests that the notion might be brought to life in the future.

When will the Live-Action Marvel Zombies Project happen?

Marvel What If Zombies Live-Action

Marvel Comic book writer Mark Millar hinted that a live-action Marvel Zombies project might be in the works. As reported by CBR, Millar discussed Marvel Zombies in his official newsletter after What If…?’s fifth episode featured zombified versions of the MCU characters. This is what he said;

“(if my sources are correct) a little live-action Marvel Zombies further down the line, but you never heard that from me.”

In case you missed it, Millar originated the notion during his Ultimate Fantastic Four run. It also led to a five-issue limited series by Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips, which ran from December 2005 to April 2006 and was written by Robert Kirkman.

When it comes from an experienced Marvel writer like Millar, fans should approach this story with caution. However, there’s a chance that it’s not completely false. The alleged information is especially noteworthy given Millar’s ties to Hollywood. To make better sense of it, numerous of his books have in fact been adapted for the big screen.

The zombified versions of Marvel’s First Family from an alternative reality made their début in Millar’s Ultimate Fantastic Four series. Millar’s comic run served as a springboard for Marvel Zombies’ eventual limited series. And it appears that the What If…? animated series may do the same.

Live-Action debut in upcoming Doctor Strange movie

Marvel Studios’ first animated film established the concept. So, it’s logical to believe the franchise is likely laying the groundwork for its live-action appearance in the future. Additionally, Millar’s assertion confirms this. Unconfirmed reports also predict a live-action debut for the MCU’s undead in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A certain amount of narrative logic can be found in this. Hence, the sequel may pave the way for these zombified versions to be introduced on a massive scale. All this, before being thrust to the forefront in its own project.

By including Marvel Zombies, the MCU may soon embrace the universe, bringing back characters such as Iron Man and Black Widow in a fresh way that hasn’t been seen in the past.

As far as when or how this may happen, it’s the same as attempting to estimate what movies Marvel could be preparing for 2025, but merely the notion that we might see anything like this is enough for now. For the time being, viewers can remember what happened to the zombie episode of What If…?, which is presently available on Disney Plus.
