Marvel Studios launched Phase 4 with the eye-catching story of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The movie gained phenomenal audiences and saw success as soon as it premiered in September 2021. It even went ahead to set the record for the biggest labour-day weekend of all time.

Additionally, Shang-Chi introduced fans to an incredibly engaging new story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Simu Liu’s Marvel debut and the elaborate team of Shang-Chi surpassed all expectations. And thus, Marvel saw a brand new bonafide superstar hero and a plethora of opportunities to work with moving forward.

Upcoming projects to explore the world introduced by Shang-Chi

Marvel recently announced the slate of upcoming projects in the franchise. These include theatrical releases, TV shows exclusively premiering on Disney+, and animation series. Despite these projects, Marvel focuses on developing Liu’s hero. Especially to explore his character for him to take the to excellent new heights both on and off-screen. There are a few reports that reveal the studios plans for a sequel. Rumours suggest that the Shang-Chi sequel’s filming will begin in 2023. Not just that. There are even discussions surrounding a spin-off show. This show will shed light on the film’s post-credits scene, with Xialing leading the Ten Rings.

Leading all the plans for Shang-Chi’s future in the MCU is director Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton has worked hard towards presenting the world with the MCU’s first Asian superhero. His passionate devotion proved successful with Shang-Chi’s story being told alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Following the project’s reception, it is evident that Cretton’s tenure with Marvel is for the long term. Fortunately, the studio even confirmed his position with this news. 

Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton signs a long term deal with Marvel. 

Recently, a report via Deadline revealed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton signed a multi-year contract with Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. As a matter of fact, the director is already working on an MCU spin-off series for Disney+ as part of this deal. The series is based on Meng’er Zhang’s Xialing and the Ten Rings.

In addition to that, Disney also officially confirmed through the report that Cretton will also start developing the sequel to Shang-Chi. The movie premiered in theatres in September 2021 and will come back for another sequence.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige talked highly of Cretton too. Feige is described as “an amazing collaborator” following their time working on Shang-Chi. Feige also said how he is looking forward to “expanding [their] relationship” for future projects. Here is the full excerpt of the Marvel president’s opinion. 

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”

It is clear from the above comment that Feige is excited for more projects from Cretton. And that the currently developing Shang-Chi sequel and the planned Disney+ series are something to anticipate. 

Cretton & Marvel will collaborate for good and for long. 

Marvel Studios is rapidly progressing in its Phase 4. With fan expectations driving higher by the second, the team continuously recruits its best and remarkable behind-the-scenes personnel. The studios will require their contribution to the work for the coming few years. Particular focus is being laid on the diversity-focused Onyx Collective division. As reports confirm, WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaeffer is bound into a three-year deal for parvel and 20th Television. In addition, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is already working on an elaborate project concerning several Wakanda-centric entries. 

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, now on Disney+

To work alongside these big names, Cretton has also joined the team. Because of receiving massive applause for his efforts with Simu Liu on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. With such pride, the film showed off its second-highest opening weekend box office gross of 2021. But this is before the upcoming release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is also expected to end the year on glorious heights for Marvel Studios. Cretton fleshed out an engaging narrative for Shang-Chi in a post-Avengers: Endgame MCU scenario. And the fans only embraced it with thrill.   

This news only brings anticipation among audiences. However, the question that still stands is this.

How long is Cretton’s tenure with the studios? And how many projects will he bring into the MCU?

The officially announced projects are possibly Xialing Disney+ show and the sequel to his first MCU film, September’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Moreover, as the story moves forward, the franchise will definitely create more potential for developing the world of Shang-Chi to wider extents. Whatever the results are, we are certain that Cretton will exceed our hopes. And his presence will have a huge effect on the future of the MCU.
