For more than a decade, two seasoned franchises have steered the cosmic strand of the MCU. With Chris Hemsworth and Chris Pratt’s futures in doubt, Marvel Studios is in need of new space-faring actors to join the casts of Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is in command, there are still a number of concepts that have yet to be developed.
Nova, an enhanced member of the Nova Corps, is the most popular of those unused characters. Since 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the intergalactic police force has been a part of the MCU, but the flying hero has yet to make an appearance.
It was first rumored in May 2020 that Marvel Studios would be working on a Nova film project. Nova’s whereabouts have remained largely a mystery aside from rumors of a start date and confirmation of his impending arrival by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Right now, work on Richard Rider’s MCU debut is progressing rapidly.
Writer Sabir Pirzada, best known for his work on the Moon Knight series, will pen a Nova script for Marvel Studios, according to Deadline. It’s unclear whether Marvel Studios’ Nova project will be a film or a series for Disney+, but sources say it’s “likely” to be the latter.
Richard Rider and Sam Alexander are two characters who have taken on the identity of Nova in the comics. Marvel Studios is expected to focus on the former.
It’s been a long time since Richard Rider’s character, Nova, has appeared on the Marvel page. Rider’s Nova made his first appearance in 1976’s The Man Called Nova #1 and has since appeared in numerous major Marvel Comics events, including Annihilation and Secret Invasion. As well as being able to fly, Nova also has the ability to absorb and release energy in pulses and beams.
They, too, have a long-awaited feel to their work. Hulk was originally meant to be the hero who crashed through the Sanctum Sanctorum and alerted Doctor Strange to Thanos’s impending arrival. However, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed that they originally had Nova in mind for the role.
It has been revealed that Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has read at least 75% of the character’s backstory. Kevin Feige described Nova as having “immediate potential” when he first announced her as a member of the MCU.
Nova’s production is expected to begin “sometime in 2023,” according to previous rumors. By appointing Sabir Pirzada, who is credited as a co-writer on half of Moon Knight’s episodes, Marvel Studios appears to be using the remainder of this calendar year to develop the project further.
