James Gunn is now DCU’s new CEO along with Peter Safran. But his responsibilities with Marvel Studios aren’t over yet. After all, until Guardians Of The Galaxy volume 3 releases, he’s contractually obligated to promote it. But now that the MCU trilogy helmed by him is coming to a close, fans want to know who his favourite character is in the franchise. And the savvy director has finally answered the question.

In an interview with Deadline, James Gunn revealed his favourite Guardians character and said that he needed to finish the trilogy just to satisfactorily close his story. He said:

“The reason why I needed to finish this is because I love the character of Rocket more than any character I’ve ever dealt with before, and I needed to finish his story and that is what Volume 3 is about. I absolutely needed to do it, and I think we’ve done it in a spectacular way that I can’t wait for people to see.”

He was also asked about his feelings regarding finally leaving the MCU for DC. He responded as:

“I feel really comfortable. I feel really good. We did this. I think this is a bit of goofy fun that the Guardians needed as an aperitif for Volume 3, which is an enormous film. I had a plan from the beginning.”

In the same interview, Gunn also shared his opinion on the future of the Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise. He said:

“It’s not ever going to be the same group of characters for a lot of different reasons. Who knows what will happen with the Guardians franchise in regards to future characters, but in terms of this group of characters, this is the end of their story.”

So James Gunn has confirmed that the third movie in the Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy will mark the end of this set of characters. Could this mean certain death? After all they will be presumably going after Gamora in the third movie, and who knows what might happen in the journey.

Or maybe Gunn might just give the characters a happy ending. But no matter what, it’s certain that the Guardians Of The Galaxy franchise isn’t stopping. After all, the two movies released till now have made over $1.6 billion at the world wide box office.

Which set of new characters do you think will form the new Guardians Of The Galaxy team? Let us know.
