Marvel’s Infinity Saga ended with Avengers: Endgame. And since then, the MCU has taken a big leap from the Avengers story. Phase 4 is constantly introducing new characters into the fold. In addition, the MCU is laying a unique groundwork as it explores Earth, the intergalactic world, as well as the Multiverse. It is safe to assume that a crossover like Endgame is just around the corner. Chances are that this spectacle will be provided by Secret Wars.

While the MCU has a bunch of Multiversal heroes who could fit into the mix, there are Marvel’s six legacy Avengers that we’re most enthusiastic about. And the year 2022 is when these Avengers will make an appearance in the MCU.

2021 Characters

Sam Wilson as Captain America

Steve Rogers’ Captain America is no longer a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the hero could make an unexpected appearance for Secret Wars, or even Captain America 4. Last we heard, the title of Captain America had been transferred to Sam Wilson. We saw him man up and sport the shield in order to represent the nation. Just like Steve believed him to one day become. The MCU has built the premises for him to take the position of leader of the New Avengers. While Captain Marvel could share responsibility alongside him.

The next legacy Avenger to leave a mark on the MCU was Yelena Belova. While Marvel disappointed fans with Natasha Romanoff’s last appearance in Black Widow, the MCU also introduced one of the coolest assassins, played by Florence Pugh. For a long time, fans were assured that Yelena was going to find a place among the Thunderbolts. But after her recent role in Hawkeye, chances are that she could pose as a new Avenger. Being the trained fighter she is, Yelena would be perfect to carry on the mantle as the next Black Widow on the team.

2021 not only gave us Sam Wilson and Yelena Beloba, but also delivered the MCU’s new Hawkeye. Clint Barton was seen having an interesting mentor-mentee relationship with Kate Bishop. While Hailee Steinfeld’s character will first act as a leader to the Young Avengers, moving forward, she would act as a great addition to the bigger team of Avengers 5 event project.

2022 Characters

Jane Foster As Lady Thor

One of the best legacy Avengers making a return this year is Mighty Thor. Apparently, Jane Foster will try to remodel the original Mjolnir and wield the weapon herself. There is also news that hints towards Natalie Portman’s character appearing in a standalone film. Jane could very well become the franchise’s mainstay as Earth’s new Thor. Thus opening a way for her hero to officially be a member of the New Avengers. On the other hand, Hemsworth’s Thor will take the responsibility as the God of Thunder and stay in the cosmos to take care of the people there.

After Jane Foster, the next new Avenger will be Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters. Appearing as She-Hulk in the upcoming Disney+ show, Walters will fit interestingly into the mix. The show will also bring back Smart Hulk as a guide to his sister. Which means we have another legacy character all set to join the new Avengers team.

Riri Williams

While Spider-Man was originally supposed to carry the baton for the MCU’s Iron Man legacy, it appears as if Peter Parker has paved his own path now. So Tony’s true legacy can be passed down to Riri Williams. Dominique Thorne is set to appear as Riri in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever later in 2022. After which, she will star in her own series. Whether or not she will be linked to Tony Stark is still undecided, but it is likely that Ironheart will team up with the New Avengers.

Previously, the Avengers consisted of 5 male heroes and 1 female hero. However, the Legacy team flips the concept around by including only one male hero.

With that said, Captain Marvel, Thor, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Ant-Man could potentially show up in the New Avengers lineup. But the Legacy characters of these original heroes deserve to be an equal part of the team.

The New Avengers, AKA Avengers 5 will make it to the big screen sometime in the next 3 years or so.
