Despite being responsible for some of the most successful film franchises in history, Marvel Studios has never produced a Christmas-themed special before. Some fans will be relieved to hear that James Gunn’s GOTG Holiday Special will break the trend this year. Fans of the MCU can look forward to another spooky adventure set around Halloween in addition to the one starring the recognizable band of space misfits.
To put it another way: what’s the deal here? All signs point to it being based on the Werewolf by Night comics, though it could have a different title by the time it premieres on Disney+, which is expected to be in October, given the project’s Halloween roots.
The protagonist is a werewolf, and the story may center on Jack Russell, one of the first to hold the moniker. No other plot points will be revealed at this time. Yet there are whispers that Man-Thing might show up as well.
Although Marvel Studios has not confirmed the project’s existence, it has been confirmed that acclaimed composer Michael Giacchino will serve as the Marvel’s Halloween Disney+ special director. How has it been, and when can we expect some real updates for the fans?
Director of Werewolf by Midnight and frequent MCU composer Michael Giacchino was asked about his time on the MCU’s Halloween Disney+ special on the Phase Zero podcast.
Giacchino said, “It’s an incredibly challenging process, but I’ve been having a blast,” and the newly appointed director is optimistic that “[they’ll] share a lot more about it [very soon]”:
“I’ve been having a blast. It’s an incredibly challenging process. I love it. I have every day. I’ve been having fun working on it. We’re in the middle of it and, hopefully, very soon we’ll share a lot more about it. Yea, but there’s not much I can say other than I’m having a good time and I’m working on something I love. So, I mean, that’s a win-win right there.”
It’s odd that Marvel Studios hasn’t even acknowledged Werewolf By Night exists at this point when production on the film has presumably wrapped. Perhaps it isn’t, given that they said the same thing about Black Widow when the set photos proved otherwise. Is September’s massive D23 panel hosted by Marvel Studios where we’ll finally hear the official word?
Since there have been so many speculations about when the big bad wolf will make his debut, it’s high time that we got some solid details. When the world catches up, Marvel should hopefully show them some of the rumored practical effects used.
Where does the furry new MCU character see themselves going from here? Blade will likely make his first appearance in the special, establishing Werewolf as a major player in the series moving forward. There is some mystery surrounding his appearance. One popular theory holds that the vampire hunter has been assembling a Midnight Sons team to combat a supernatural foe.
