Marvel fans are in for a treat with the upcoming “spy/espionage” thriller on Disney+, Secret Invasion, which is set to feature a more nuanced and introspective story than anything from Marvel Studios to this point. The show, which is being dubbed as the first “crossover event series,” is going to take a deeper look at some characters that fans have come to know and love over the past fifteen years.

The show’s star, Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury, revealed in a recent interview that his MCU hero is still reeling from the death of Iron Man/Tony Stark. When Secret Invasion begins, Fury is still trying to process what happened, and the biggest reason he has been ignoring the happenings on Earth since Avengers: Endgame is because he is trying to come to terms with his place in the world. Jackson notes that “even Nick Fury can be shaken,” and Fury’s vulnerability is seen in the fact that he is no longer sporting his signature eyepatch.

Jackson’s co-star Cobie Smulders adds that the upcoming streaming series is more grounded, and there is nobody present who is “glossy and ready for action in a spandex one-piece.” She notes that her wardrobe alone has changed significantly since the original film, with her character now dressed in a jeans and tee ensemble.

The Different MCU In Secret Invasion

New Secret Invasion Trailer Revealing Marvel’s Biggest Disney+ Show Yet!

Secret Invasion promises to be different from any previous Marvel Studios productions, with a more introspective and character-driven storyline. Fury’s changed character is an excellent example of this, with his loss of close friends leading him to feel like he has “lost his place in the world.” The show’s intergalactic Skrull invasion at the center of the story only amplifies Fury’s paranoia, as he no longer knows who to trust.

Despite the seemingly disparate elements of Fury’s character study and the Skrull invasion, they could complement each other in a unique way. The theme of paranoia and trust issues will be amplified when it is revealed that shape-shifting Skrulls have been hiding on Earth, possibly taking on the forms of people Fury thought he could trust.
