The MCU is one of the most successful franchises in the history of cinema. And right now, it is still chugging along perfectly. As of now, Phase 4 of the MCU has begun after seeing the successful completion of the previous 3 Phases that ended with Avengers: Endgame.
Phase 4 has a number of high-profile releases lined up before 2021 even ends. Also, more are on the way in 2022. But nothing can quite beat the excitement that’s currently surrounding Marvel’s first take on the Fantastic Four.
It can’t be denied that Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four movie helmed by Jon Watts was definitely the major important announcement to come out of Disney Investor Day 2022. This was the first time that MCU attempted to bring this team to light after 3 movies from Fox Studios.
Those 3 Fox movies have a mixed to negative reputation among the general audience. As such, fans are dying to see a great adaptation of Marvel’s first family from the camp that seemingly can’t ever miss.
Right now, Watts is the only one who is attached to the production of the Fantastic Four movie. The movie doesn’t have any official release date, and neither does it have a confirmed cast, even though fan casts are galore.
Also, there are no signs or rumors of which actors Marvel Studios will end up picking to play Sue Storm, Reed Richards, Ben Grimm, Johnny Storm of the MCU.
So, right now, nothing is concrete, but Marvel’s top executive shared some insights on what the process will be for finding the stars who will bring the Fantastic Four to life.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed the casting strategy of the team in the upcoming Fantastic Four film.
Now, Feige didn’t give any specifics regarding the casting of the characters but the Marvel head honcho did address that the MCU has a well-balanced combination consisting of up-and-comers and popular Hollywood stars.
He picked examples of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston from Thor along with Christian Bale in Thor: Love and Thunder. Feige admitted that the main thing was to find the best actors for the roles regardless of fame or popularity.
Here’s Feige’s full quote:
“I think the MCU is a beautiful combination of both (established actors and new faces),” Feige said. “I think you look no further than Simu in Shang-Chi, like Chris Hemsworth, like Tom Hiddleston, like Tom Holland, an actor that hadn’t been seen by a tremendous amount of people before, or you have a Benedict stepping into Doctor Strange or Christian Bale stepping into Gorr in our Thor film. It is always a beautiful combination of both, and it really is about the search for the best actor for the job whether that actor is known to the world yet or not.”
In fan circles, Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four has arguably seen more fan-casts than any other MCU film to date. This is especially after Fox and Disney went through the merger that would bring these iconic characters to life, but this time in the MCU.
The most popular names that are commonly associated with the fan-casts are John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. But apart from them, people want to see other actors in these roles as well.
Due to these expectations, Feige and his team want to do their best to give Marvel and Fantastic Four fans the best possible cast, irrespective of how famous the actors are.
Now, it’s possible that the names that frequently pop up in the fan casts might be seen on screen, but even then, expectations for the casting for this movie are particularly high. Sometimes, it seems like Marvel might fall short of the tall order.
However, most fans have faith in Marvel’s casting. After that, they have nailed previous castings. Feige’s comments also clearly indicate that Marvel has shown time and time again how to make pop stars out of unknown actors and established stars alike.
After all, Phase 1 began with 30-year old veteran Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, while also giving newcomer Chris Hemsworth the spotlight as Thor. And this was all done within 3 years.
But the casting of Fantastic Four is still some time away. Right now, Simu Liu is all set to mesmerize fans as Shang-Chi in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Also, right after Shang-Chi comes November’s Eternals which has icons like Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.
This mix and match in the above two movies also indicate that Marvel truly believes in casting the best person for the job. So when Marvel does begin casting for the Fantastic Four, it will be done perfectly.
