With the release of MCU Eternals, a new superhero team will be introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This team will include a strong ensemble of Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Salma Hayek, and Kit Harington. Directed by Chloe Zhao, the upcoming Marvel movie is about a group of cosmic immortals who have lived on Earth for thousands of years but have chosen not to participate in human wars.
The film’s last trailer reveals that this is because the Celestials commanded them to only reveal themselves when the Deviants are involved. The MCU Eternals have long been established in Marvel Comics as a formidable force. Consequently, the marketing campaign confirms that there will be no exception in the live-action version.
In an interview with Total Film, the cast members discussed their characters’ various powers and abilities in the film.
Barry Keoghan, who plays Druig, is distant and a loner on-screen, but he immediately became friends with his co-stars in real life. Keoghan revealed that his character “uses mind-control to manipulate and control people,” adding that it’s sort of interesting since “he doesn’t do anything with his hands:”
“He uses mind-control to manipulate and control people. Druig doesn’t do anything with his hands. He just stares, which is kind of cool.”
Ikaris is known to be one of the most powerful Eternals. Played by Richard Madden stated that the character has the ability to fly and shoot lasers from his eyes:
“His powers are pretty cool. He’s really very strong and has the ability to fly and shoot lasers from his eyes. I suppose the main challenge was trying to make something look effortless.”
Phastos’ role is played by Atlanta actor Brian Tyree Henry. The character is an excellent creator with a mind for invention technology and weapons. In the interview he revealed that his character “can use his mind and his energy to build anything from any technology around him:
“They like to call him a techno-path, which basically means he can use his mind and his energy to literally assemble anything out of any technology around him.”
Makkari is the first deaf hero in the MCU. While Makkari’s “most obvious power” is superspeed, actress Lauren Ridloff emphasized that her character’s real power is “her smarts:”
“Her most obvious power is speed, but how she manipulates speed as a weapon is just brilliant, so her true power is her smarts.”
Kingo, in contrast to the other Eternals, chose to stay hidden for a long time. He also managed to make a career as a Bollywood star throughout those years. When asked about his part as Kingo, Kumail Nanjiani said that his cosmic character can “shoot beams from his arms,” and he also talked about his pre-filming preparations:
“He can shoot beams from his arms. From his hands, he shoots beams. Obviously, they add laser beams in the post. I didn’t go that method with it. I took martial arts and dance classes to figure out what his motion would be when he was shooting.”
Unlike some Eternals, Sersi has a genuine affection for and respect for humans. She now works as a museum curator and is seeing someone. Sersi, a character with the power to influence non-sentient matter, occupies a significant portion of Eternals’ narrative. Gemma Chan explains the same as follows:
“Sersi can manipulate matter. So inanimate – I suppose – substances or objects, she can transmute them into other things. Which is pretty useful. That’s a good thing.”
Although McHugh’s Sprite seems to be a young adolescent, she is actually tens of thousands of years old. According to Lia McHugh, who plays Sprite in the film, her character’s abilities are “utilized in a lot of creative ways” since she “can cast illusions:”
“Sprite can cast illusions! Her powers are utilized in a lot of creative ways in Eternals that become very relevant to the story.”
When Marvel first contacted Hayek, she had no idea what to anticipate. However, when she learned that Zhao would be involved, she quickly said yes. When asked what her ability is in the movie, actress Salma Hayek said it’s healing, and that it’s the “sensation of a mother.”
“Another thing that inspired me was that her superpower is healing. That very much is the sensation of a mother.”
Even while Jolie is no stranger to high-profile productions, she was taken aback by the scope of Eternals. One of the group’s most skilled fighters, Thena can conjure weapons out of thin air. There is an ability in the film that Angelina Jolie plays called “could manifest weapons in my hands,” according to the actress who plays Thena.
“I was given the ‘could manifest weapons in my hands’ [power]. A lot of my training was really fun, to try to figure out how to fight that way.”
Although the actor who portrays the immortal Dane Whitman didn’t reveal anything about his character’s skills or powers, the actor did tease how “very cool” his interactions with the other MCU Eternals will be:
“I’d just like power. It was very cool, my interaction with those characters. It was cool to see – and also very jealous-making.”
Actor Don Lee has claimed that his character possesses “superhuman strength” and that he is “considered the strongest” among the cosmos:
“Gilgamesh is immortal, has superhuman strength, and is considered the strongest of the Eternals. He has a unique one-punch knockout attack like a heavyweight boxer. As a long-time boxer myself, I tried to add a lot of real boxing movements.”
Each Eternals member’s ability breakdown shows that when the movie hits cinemas, their talents will be put to the test to the fullest extent possible. Whether they use energy beams or matter manipulation, every single one of them is a powerful weapon in battle.
When it comes to the Eternals in Marvel Comics, they don’t simply have one or two special abilities. Each one of them, on the other hand, is endowed with superhuman abilities. These include telepathy, super-speed,telekinesis and super strength. These, and the ability to manipulate matter.
