The fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) brought back Ultron, the rogue artificial intelligence, in a surprising way, featuring him in a brief appearance in the animated series, What If…? on Disney+. Then, the appearance of the character sparked speculation if the villain could return to the MCU in the future. Recently, a rumor has surfaced that may have spoiled the surprise of his comeback in Phase 5 of the MCU.

“Trusted sources” from the Marvel Studios Spoilers subreddit’s Tales from the Mod Queue have claimed something unique. As per them, James Spader will reprise his role as Ultron in the upcoming MCU series, “Armor Wars.” James Spader last portrayed Ultron in the MCU in 2015’s  Avengers film.

It’s unclear whether the character will play the primary antagonist in the series. After all, details about the plot of “Armor Wars” have not been revealed. However, a previous rumor suggested that Ultron could return, citing the fact that the villain was not entirely destroyed at the end of  the second Avengers film. Now, fragments of the program still exist in the universe in a “dormant” state.

How Can Ultron Comeback?

As “Armor Wars” is heavily linked to Tony Stark’s legacy, it’s not surprising that Ultron, a villain he created, will make a comeback. However, how will the return of  the robot take place in it? In the 2015 Avengers movie, Vision destroyed the last Ultron bot, seemingly defeating the rogue AI.

However, Ultron being an AI provides a possible explanation for his return. According to a past rumor, small fragments of the robot remain dormant and can be reactivated accidentally or deliberately by whoever is meddling with Stark’s technology in “Armor Wars.”

A subtle Easter egg in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” revealed that the Department of Damage Control has a head of an Ultron bot. As the group is rumored to return in “Armor Wars,” it is plausible that this broken bot could be used to facilitate James Spader’s return to the MCU.

Regardless of how Ultron returns, his reappearance spells trouble for the remaining Avengers, particularly in the absence of Tony Stark. Marvel Studios has not yet announced the release date for “Armor Wars.”
