At this point in Phase 4, several types of magic have been introduced into the MCU. It’s common for most to have their own distinct visual identity. In addition, each one’s abilities and levels of power are distinctive.

The MCU has seen a dramatic shift in the importance of magic over the years. One of Doctor Strange’s most important weapons, as well as one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts’, it’s appeared in several Marvel films as a plot device. Is a major player in Doctor Strange films as well as Thor, WandaVision and the Eternals? It was recently used as a weapon by Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow against Oscar Isaac’s Steven Grant in Disney+’s Moon Knight show.

In light of Marvel’s plans for the remainder of Phase 4 and beyond, magic will continue to play an important role in the MCU moving forward. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Agatha: House of Harkness will undoubtedly make use of it, as will Blade and Disney+’s upcoming Halloween special. It may also be pertinent to any mystical or supernatural stories Marvel has in the works. However, Marvel’s movies and shows use magic in different ways because the MCU has multiple types of magic. The most potent of each type is listed below.

Celestial Magic

In the MCU, the Eternals appear to be able to perform a unique form of magic that is distinct to their species and creators. Known for its golden hue, this celestial magic is a form of cosmic energy that the Eternals can harness and manipulate. This is the difference between Thena and Sprite in terms of their abilities. Their powers were given to them by the celestial gods, and each member of the Eternals used them in their own unique way.

Eldritch Magic

Known as Eldritch magic by the Masters of the Mystic Arts, which first appeared in Doctor Strange, Eldritch magic first appeared in Stranger Things. It is possible for humans to control Eldritch magic, but only those with disciplined minds and years of practice can do so. Doctor Strange is one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because of his expertise in Eldritch magic. The Sorcerer Supreme has an infinite number of weapons at his disposal because of his mastery of this type of magic. He has the ability to create illusions, unleashes a variety of offensive and defensive spells, travels to other dimensions, and much more. Then there are those who use Eldritch magic and need the help of magical objects.

Asgardian Magic

The Asgardians are the first to use magic in the MCU. A few of Odin’s gods have the ability to manipulate powerful magical energies and put them to use in a wide variety of ways. People like Thor see magic as a highly advanced form of science that they’ve been working on for centuries. Frigga, Thor’s mother, was one of Asgard’s most skilled sorcerers, having learned magic from a group of witches. After that, she passed on her knowledge to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, whose battles have shown just how potent Asgardian magic can be.

Loki’s Asgardian magic has allowed the God of Mischief to create impressive illusions, which are typically accompanied by green visual effects. Using only this power, Loki can appear to be someone else entirely and deceive his foes with projections of his own image. Asgardian magic, on the other hand, is capable of far more than mere illusions. Loki can use it to hurl energy blasts, conjure objects out of thin air, and create energy shields to protect himself from incoming fireballs.

Jotun Magic

Jotun

Loki had magical connections even before Frigga’s help. His people, the Jotunheim Frost Giants, are adept at using ice magic. For some reason, they have an inherent ability to manipulate ice and possibly water as well. Laufey and his allies were able to use this Jotun magic to turn ice into weapons in Thor because of this. When they control ice they can easily create armor and weapons that are strong enough to be used against opponents as powerful as the Asgardians. This allows them to take on the Asgardians in combat with ease. He is a Frost Giant, which means that Loki has access to the same abilities, but he has probably opted not to use them.

Dark Dimension Magic

 dormammu

Master of the Mystic Arts rules states that the use of Dark Dimension magic is strictly prohibited in MCU. Infuriating Baron Mordo, it was discovered that the Ancient One had secretly broken this longstanding prohibition. The sorcerer can gain immense power by channelling energy from Dormammu’s realm, which is far more potent than Eldritch magic. It’s risky to go down this path because the sorcerer could be influenced by Dormammu’s evil influence through the use of Dark Dimension magic.

Dark Magic

Agatha Harkness

Certain MCU characters can wield evil magic in addition to the power of the Dark Dimension. As well as purple-tinged dark magic, there is also white magic. In WandaVision, Agatha Harkness used this power to fight Scarlet Witch. Moon Knight episode 2 appears to have another appearance of dark magic, or at the very least, something very similar to it. Harrow summoned a jackal with the help of the staff of Ammit. At times, the staff appeared to be emitting a purple energy field. Is this mysterious power coming from just one source? The color has given that impression. In addition to Ammit, Moon Knight’s Ammit might have it.

Chaos Magic

Scarlet Witch

It was confirmed by WandaVision that the Scarlet Witch is a weapon of Chaos Magic, which is red in color. One of the most powerful beings ever to have roamed the Earth is called Chthon in the comics, and he is responsible for Chaos Magic. For Wanda to become the Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics, he must have transferred some of his Chaos Magic powers into her body as a child. Using this ability, Scarlet Witch was able to create Westview and manipulate the lives of its residents to create her own fantasy world.

Why Chaos Magic is the most powerful MCU magical force

Wanda
Wanda

Scarlet Witch wields the most potent form of magic in the MCU, just as she does in the comics. Wanda’s ability to rewrite reality with it, as well as Agatha’s reaction when she realized what she was up against, speaks volumes about its potential. In the end, Agatha couldn’t overcome Wanda, despite being an experienced sorcerer and possessing the Darkhold. On top of that, MCU’s Chaos Magic has a much higher power level than Scarlet Witch, so it’s implied that despite studying the mystical arts, Doctor Strange is still weaker than Scarlet Witch.
