Marvel Comics has announced that Layla El-Faouly, played by May Calamawy in the MCU series Moon Knight, will be introduced as the new Scarlet Scarab in the upcoming Moon Knight #25. This marks the first time an original superhero from the MCU will be included in the comics.

Loosely based on the two previous Scarlet Scarab characters, Layla’s debut will continue into the five-issue limited series, Moon Knight: City of the Dead, written by David Pepose and illustrated by Marcelo Ferreira. The series will show a much younger Layla and a much younger Marc Spector as members of the mercenary team, the Karnak Cowboys.

Excitement From The Writers

Moon Knight

Moon Knight writer Jed MacKay expressed his excitement in including an already beloved character into the comics, saying that it is a really interesting opportunity. David Pepose added that he couldn’t be more excited to be writing Layla’s debut as the all-new Scarlet Scarab.

Old Flame Or New Love Interest?

Layla And Mark

In the MCU, Layla was based on Marc Spector’s love interest, Marlene, from the comics. In the upcoming comics, Layla will know Marc Spector “better than almost anyone,” which will spark some tension between them. However, with Spector currently involved with Tigra, it remains to be seen if Layla will be set up as a new love interest or if her time in the comics will be temporary.
