Michael Shannon is set to reprise his role as General Zod in the upcoming movie, The Flash. The actor recently shared his experience of getting back in character for the film, which is expected to be brief, as he only filmed for a “couple of weeks.” Despite his limited screen time, Shannon believes that the return of Zod will still be significant, given the character’s popularity and the excitement surrounding his resurrection.
A Different Version Of Zod In The Flash
In an interview with Looper, Shannon revealed that his portrayal of Zod in The Flash would be different from his performance in Man of Steel. He explained that the character would not have as much screen time in the new movie, and audiences would not get to know him as well. Nevertheless, Shannon tried to get back into Zod’s skin and bring the character to life once again.
While Shannon’s connection in the DCEU was to Henry Cavill’s Superman, the villain’s return in The Flash will see him facing a different Kryptonian. The movie will feature Supergirl, played by Sasha Calle, as a replacement for Superman in the DC Universe’s loose adaptation of the comic book story “Flashpoint.” The most recent trailer for the movie highlighted how she is taking over the multiverse/prisoner role that Superman had in the comics.
He Isn’t The Main Villain In The Film
As Shannon himself revealed in an interview with Collider, Zod will likely not be the main villain of The Flash. New details about Michael Keaton’s older Batman in the movie through a toy description have revealed that Miller’s Barry Allen will be traveling to an alternate 2013, the year Man of Steel was released. This multiverse adventure is how Shannon’s Zod will come back from the dead, with the actor playing an alternate version of the Superman villain who will not be facing Cavill’s Man of Steel.
Despite not being the main antagonist, Zod’s appearance in The Flash could still have a significant impact on the movie’s story. In particular, the character’s relationship with Supergirl could be meaningful, as the two Kryptonians face off against each other. With Shannon having filmed only a couple of weeks for the role, the potential of The Flash movie’s Zod DCU return being used early on in the project as a moment of affirmation for Kara as Supergirl would be perfect.
