The MCU has been embracing its darker side recently with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Moon Knight. Fortunately, there’s a group made up of all these vigilante-ish characters called the Midnight Sons. There’s even an upcoming Marvel video game by the same name that will be released soon. So who exactly are the Midnight sons and what do they do? Keep reading to find out!

Who are the Midnight Sons?

The Midnight Sons are a group of 9 superheroes who were destined to defeat Lilith the Mother of Demons. These 9 heroes were brought together by none other than Doctor Strange. They were recruited to fight Lilith when Strange himself could not. All of them had connections to the occult and the mystic arts. These guys weren’t the fondest of each other and certainly did not consider one another as teammates. However, when faced with adversity they banded together. The heroes managed to weaken and then defeat Lilith. They also get their name because they fought Lilith on the land of the Midnight Sun.

They had developed a brand or a sigil which was a small cross with a sharp downward point. This mark was seared into the arms of many members of the more ancient version of the Spirits of Vengeance. These guys were the original version who defeated the demon Zarathos long before Doctor Strange gathered the nine.

After this, the members of the Midnight Sons went their own different ways but were often brought together when required. They were essentially just a loose alliance of heroes. Once Morbius called the group together to help him fight Zombies of a different universe who were spreading a deadly virus. This group was brought together once again by Wong to help Doctor Strange when Hotel Inferno had emerged in Las Vegas and had turned superheroes such as Captain Marvel, Falcon, Hawkeye and Black Panther into Ghost Riders.

Who are the members?

Over the many iterations of the Midnight Sons, there have been many members. The initial 9 brought together by Doctor Strange consisted of John Blaze, Morbius, Louise Hastings, Victoria Montesi, Sam Buchanan, Blade, Frank Drake, Hannibal King. Each and every member had some sort of connection with the occult and the supernatural elements of the world. Over time other members were added such as Werewolf by Night, Moon Knight, Iron Fist, Scarlet Spider and most notably Wong who led this group of rag tag heroes as their leader.

If and when the Midnight Sons are introduced in the MCU, characters such as Ghostrider, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night and Wong as the leader will be forming the team. Morbius most likely won’t be joining them due to the disputed rights issue between Sony and Marvel. In fact even Agatha Harkness, who will be seen next in her Disney+ show Agatha: Coven of Chaos, could also join them as an anti-hero of sorts. Especially because of her rich history with the witches of Salem and prior experience with the Darkhold. Kit Harington’s Black Knight could also join the others. His character has only slightly been teased in the Eternals post credits scene along with Blade’s voice in the background.

When and how will the Midnight Sons debut in the MCU?

The MCU is already introducing the various members of the Midnight Sons with Wong and Doctor Strange well in the limelight and Moon Knight having his own series. Soon we will be seeing Blade and Werewolf by Night. In fact the MCU is branding it as a Halloween special which shows its interest in exploring the supernatural side of Marvel further. However, it is unlikely that there will be a Midnight Sons project until phase 7 of the MCU. After all, San Diego Comic Con and the D23 expo have already established most of the MCU’s timeline through Phase 5 and Phase 6. They will be building up the Multiversal Saga and introduce Kang to bring it all to a proper conclusion. This does not give much space for a new, completely different kind of project.
