Multiple Wakanda-centric Disney+ shows are reportedly in development. After the release of the sequel, it is unknown whether Ryan Coogler will return to helm another Black Panther film. It’s no secret that the director is teaming up with Marvel Studios to create Disney+ spinoffs. Marvel claims that Wakanda’s influence will spread well beyond the country’s borders.

Marvel Studios has shown a lot of enthusiasm for streaming prequels and sequels to its major film series as the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows on Disney+. The newest information is that Coogler’s Wakanda project for Disney+ is still in the brainstorming phase. Okoye, played by Danai Gurira, is said to be the star of an “origin spinoff series” set to air on the site shortly.

Multiple Wakanda-centric Shows Confirmed

According to Variety, Marvel Studios is producing potential Black Panther Disney+ spin-offs with Ryan Coogler’s production business, Proximity Media. The director of the 2018 Marvel movie Wakanda Forever is also producing the upcoming TV series Ironheart, which will act as a direct sequel to the film in 2023.

According to previous rumors, Marvel Studios is working on two Black Panther spin-offs, one centered on the Kingdom of Wakanda and the other tracing the roots of Danai Gurira’s character Okoye. The most recent statements, though, suggest that the first unnamed initiative is likely still in its infancy.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said that they had discussed doing a third Wakanda film together, but they have no plans to adapt the director’s script for the Multiversal blockbuster.

The director elaborated on how he is now preoccupied with fulfilling what he considers to be his ultimate commitment as a filmmaker: the release of Wakanda Forever. Coogler has been tight-lipped about his plans for future films, although he has said he plans to take “some rest and family time” soon.

“It’s very difficult because you’re exhausted and emotionally spent, and I’m trying to give it all my full attention. After that, I’ll figure out what’s going on with me. But I think it’s going to be some rest and family time.”

Marvel Studios producer Nate Moore, in a subsequent interview with Variety, dropped hints about the spin-offs by saying Wakanda Forever will provide “more opportunities to go back to Wakanda”:

“This world is expansive, and there are so many great characters. Beyond what happens with this film, there are more opportunities to go back to Wakanda.”

Wakanda Forever Gives Hope

Nate Moore hinted that some concepts for multiple Wakanda-centric Disney+ spin-offs would have returning protagonists from the Black Panther franchise, while others would feature brand-new characters. There is no lack of ideas, the producer claimed, but he wouldn’t say how many spin-offs are now in the works.

Given that the original “Black Panther” picture made over $1 billion at the box office and that the sequel is presently garnering great reviews with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 86%, it is easy to see why Marvel Studios would wish to keep going back to that well. So far, Ryan Coogler’s greatest contribution to the series has been the introduction of a wealth of interesting new characters and settings in the fictional African nation of Wakanda.

Without giving anything away, the narrative and characters in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are well-suited to become a Disney+ series or two. Of course, this is great news for Disney as the company looks to keep building its streaming and MCU empires.
