The Multiverse will take center stage in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A follow-up to 2016’s Doctor Strange, the upcoming MCU film will feature the return of Benedict Cumberbatch’s titular sorcerer. Familiar allies such as Benedict Wong’s Wong and Rachel McAdams’ Christine Palmer will reprise their roles. Also, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff and newcomer America Chavez will join the alternate reality adventure.

Since its announcement, the details of Multiverse of Madness have been kept under wraps. A combination of rumors, leaked merchandise, and the sequel’s first official trailer have revealed important details about the sequel in the past few months.

According to the first footage from the sequel, after NWH, Strange seeks Wanda’s help to fix whatever has gone wrong in the Multiverse. The appearance of Gargantos, a one-eyed tentacle monster that threatens Strange and his allies, was also hinted at in leaked promotional art. A new listing for the film may have hinted at the inclusion of a second, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

A New Version of Guardians of the Multiverse?

Doctor Strange as the Guardian of the Multiverse

The Cosmic Circus has found some official new merchandise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which may hint at the possibility of an appearance by The Avengers team from multiple universes. The official description of a premium t-shirt for the movie teases the existence of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes “that may just be from a whole new Multiverse:”

“Experience Doctor Strange in a whole-new mind-bending adventure with Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This Avengers t-shirt showcases the Avengers logo for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that might just be from a whole new multiverse. Available in youth and adult sizes. Get it in a t-shirt, premium t-shirt, tank top, v-neck, long sleeve tee, and sweatshirt.”

A new Avengers logo was also unveiled in conjunction with the announcement:

Many agree that anything can happen in the Doctor Strange sequels. Consequently, this latest description does not guarantee a live-action appearance. The concept of the Multiverse Guardians was first introduced in What If…?, in which the Watcher enlists the help of heroes from all over the multiverse. It’s possible that this Avengers team came from an alternate Earth. However, the description’s wording makes it sound like they’re the main MCU heroes.

It’s possible that the Avengers team from What If…? Captain Carter could appear to help Strange with the Multiversal chaos, given the wide popularity of her character. Regarding keeping up with the status of the star-spangled hero, this would be an excellent opportunity to do so.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has previously hinted that the stories in What If…? “may… spin into other mediums,” which is in line with this statement. When multiple realities are at stake, it makes sense for the Avengers team to be included in the Multiverse of Madness.
