The very first mention of a Multiversal existence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was made through Loki and What If…? After that, Marvel Studios offered audiences a groundbreaking big screen spectacle with Spider-Man: No Way Home. And if you think nothing could top seeing three, live-action Spider-Men swinging across in the MCU, you are so wrong. Because this is just the beginning of Marvel’s Multiversal tale. In May of 2022, MCU will explore the Phase 4 theme with grander premises with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Along with Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as Doctor Strange, Multiverse of Madness will feature a long list of members to the outing. These include Xochitl Gomez debuting as MCU newcomer America Chavez, as well as Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mordo, Benedict Wong as Wong, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer.
Regardless of the vast ensemble, there is one element of the film that fans are hooked on. It is none other than the film’s most interesting co-star, Elizabeth Olsen appearing as the Scarlet Witch.
The film will be her first big-screen appearance after her Westview withcident in WandaVision. Incidentally, from what we can tell from the early merchandise for the upcoming film is that Wanda Maximoff will have quite some stuff to deal with.
There aren’t many details revealed concerning Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, fans have managed to uncover a few things about the sequel through its merchandise. For instance, the film will feature a ponytailed-variant, “Defender Strange”. A Marvel Legends action figure packaging is what leaked the details. Whereas some newly released T-shirts revealed visuals of Gargantos.
And now, a visible detail in the film’s Scarlet Witch merchandise points towards Wanda Maximoff’s future miseries and struggles.
The new merchandise includes a T-shirt that displays the Scarlet Witch’s fresh look. The print on the tee makes it seem as if darkness is coming from Wanda’s heart and bleeding through her costume.
As an interesting fact, the detail matches the clip of the WandaVision star seen in the latest teaser trailer of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer.
The Twitter user @itsjustanotherx who spotted out this detail also suggested the theory that the Darkhold could be corrupting her heart.
It makes sense because fans last saw Wanda Maximoff in the WandaVision post-credits scene. Wanda appeared to be sitting in a cabin where her astral form was reading the Darkhold. This was before she heard both her kids’ voices as they called for help.
It is true that this new-found detail provides enough ground for theories. But the darkness over Wanda’s heart is not the first and the only hint connected to Scarlet Witch’s seeming Doctor Strange 2 troubles. The same shot that displays this detail of Wanda in the trailer also reveals her blackened fingertips. This reminds us of Agatha Harkness when she used Dark Magic to try and exhaust Wanda of all her chaotic energy in WandaVision.
Some fans are theorizing Wanda’s character in the film to be less of a villainous one. More so because she is so involved in trying to find her kids. Also, a secret evil role would be new for her after her roughly unintentional stunts in WandaVision left her with a foul impression. Even though it was Agatha who was influencing her.
Another thing to consider is that Doctor Strange 2 will feature more than one version of Doctor Strange. Which means that this Scarlet Witch with the darkness growing out of her heart and fingers could very well be a different version of Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff. Even her astral form?
It is apparent that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still traversing the outer lands of Multiverse. There is a possibility that the case is somewhat similar to the Scarlet Witch. Mainly because of her character’s fate on the Disney+ show. In WandaVision, after Olsen’s character experiences so much loss. She finally starts to walk the path where she tries to deal with her grief the right way.
So if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness decides to pose more struggles for Wanda, or creates an evil version out of the Scarlet Witch, the real thrill will be to see how this development aligns with her narrative of WandaVision.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled for its theatrical release on May 6, 2022.
