In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the new King of Wakanda has been revealed, and one of the stars of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has let the cat out of the bag. There’s a lot of material packed into the Black Panther 2’s two hours and forty-one minutes, but there’s still opportunity for additional plots. At the film’s conclusion, Shuri has taken on the mantle of Black Panther and established herself as Wakanda’s de facto defender.

The actor who played M’Baku in the film has lately verified what the film’s ending seemed to imply about his new role: that T’Challa, unlike her brother, chooses not to become Wakanda’s monarch. Black Panther actor Winston Duke, who portrays the beloved character M’Baku, has verified the long-suspected rumor about who the next King of Wakanda is.

M’Baku As The New King Of Wakanda

In an interview with Esquire, Duke announced M’Baku’s coronation as the fifth King of Wakanda. Winston Duke has said unequivocally that he is the next king of Wakanda, despite the fact that Shuri may be the new Black Panther.

“Yeah, it’s kind of cool to be revealed as the King of Wakanda at the end of the movie,” the actor said. “That’s huge. So whatever that entails, it’s gonna be a fun one.”

In response to questions about why he wasn’t picked to play Black Panther, he says, “the strength of Black Panther has always been the ensemble”:

“You know, I love the support that I’ve gotten from the fans. I think the strength of Black Panther has always been the ensemble. It’s always been [that] Black Panther [has] had to lean on everyone around him. Whether M’Baku’s the next anything, it’s still gonna be a great ensemble piece.”

There were rumblings that the character might succeed T’Challa after Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing, but that clearly didn’t pan out. M’Baku has a promising future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but will he ever get the spotlight he deserves in a solo film?

Shuri’s absence at the ceremony could be seen as a clear forfeit, crowning M’Baku the new king of Wakanda.  However, it is unclear if she knew that M’Baku would oppose her for the throne or whether she struck an arrangement with him beforehand. In any case, Duke described the event as monumental. But of course, as always, only time will tell.
