At D23 2022 in a few months, Marvel and Star Wars will make announcements about upcoming films and television series in their respective universes. After obtaining Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, Walt Disney Studios’ hold on pop culture was further solidified. The MCU has grown to be the most successful film franchise in history under Disney’s guidance, with Avengers: Endgame setting new box office records. Meanwhile, Disney+’s The Mandalorian, a Star Wars prequel series, has been a huge hit since debuting on the streaming service in May.
In addition to the MCU and Star Wars, Disney has a wealth of other franchises and intellectual property. With a full slate of films and Disney+ shows scheduled through 2023, Marvel Studios has plenty of other projects in the works. There is a lot of focus on the small screen for Lucasfilm with Star Wars. New seasons of The Mandalorian are in the works, as are spinoffs like Ahsoka and new projects like The Acolyte. The upcoming Star Wars film slate, on the other hand, is less certain. A lot more information about both franchises is expected to be released in the near future.
D23 Expo 2022 will be held in Anaheim, California, in September of 2022, and Disney has released the complete schedule. On September 10, a major panel featuring Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm will take place at 10 a.m. PST to discuss upcoming theatrical releases and Disney+ original programming. A variety of guests and previously unseen material will be featured, including cast members and crew members from the various productions. New MCU and Star Wars projects will be announced, as the panel’s description mentions in passing that “what else is in the works” will be revealed.
Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm are expected to make major announcements at D23 2022, which comes as no surprise. The company first confirmed Ms. Marvel, Moon Knight, and She-Hulk’s existence at D23 back in 2019. At the time, Lucasfilm also delivered in a big way, with the official announcement of Ewan McGregor’s return to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Due to COVID-19, Disney has not held one of these expos in the last 24 months, resulting in the announcement of new MCU and Star Wars projects elsewhere.
It’s a little more difficult to predict what Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm will announce at D23 2022. Werewolf by Night could be confirmed here or shows like Nova, Okoye, and the reboot of Daredevil could be given more information about their status. D23 could be a good time for Lucasfilm to reveal more about its plans for the galaxy far, far away, following the absence of any of the films from Star Wars Celebration 2022. Whatever the case may be, it appears that Disney’s event will clarify the prospect of the MCU and the Star Wars franchises.
