Spider-Man: No Way Home is still the talk of the town after almost one month in theatres. The movie has crossed a billion dollars at the box office and has garnered an overall positive critical reception.

Marvel Studios and Sony have both submitted the movie for the Oscars, along with the entire MCU 2021 movie slate in all categories. However, due to a little mistake, Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home won’t be eligible for the 2022 British Academy Film Awards.

Sony Failed To Submit No Way Home Within The Stated Deadline

As per Deadline, the movie won’t be considered for the BAFTA awards because Sony didn’t submit Spider-Man: No Way Home to the BAFTA online portal within the eligibility window.

And even though efforts were made for an exception, the full screener wasn’t ultimately uploaded for voting members even after it missed its January 3 cut-off.

Here’s what BAFTA had to say regarding the matter:

“Spider-Man: No Way Home did not meet the eligibility criteria for the EE British Academy Film Awards 2022 and therefore did not qualify for entry,” BAFTA said in a statement. As outlined in our rulebook, all films must be made available to voting members on BAFTA View prior to Round One voting closing to ensure fairness and parity for all titles, and the film was not made available by the distributor.”

The BAFTA Awards are hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, and they have taken place every year since 1949 to celebrate not just British, but also international cinema.

In earlier years, the event took place in early to late spring, but over the years, and specifically since 2001, the BAFTA Awards have gone for February celebrations. However, it returned to April for 2021 and will be held in March of this year.

So, the BAFTA awards are a no-go for No Way Home. But Sony and Marvel have set their eyes on a bigger prize- The Academy Awards. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman Tom Rothman said:

“This is a big picture on the big screen at a moment when the big screen experience is fighting for its life. This is a chance for the Academy to strike a blow for the big screen. This is why they expanded the best picture category to 10 films, for exactly this circumstance.”

He also said:

“I don’t give a darn about the ratings on the Academy show, and I don’t think that’s what it should be about. I don’t think anybody should vote for this movie because they think it would help the ratings. I think they should vote for this movie because it’s one of the 10 best films of the year.”
