House of the Dragon episode 3 is out, and in a scene where King and his companions are out for the hunt, we see Ser Otto Hightower suggesting King Viserys something related to Rhaenyra Targaryen.

King is worrying about the fact that every eligible bachelor prince is seeking to marry Rhaenyra and strengthen their alliance with the Iron Throne. Viserys was upsetRh that his daughter is now of age, but she is denying to get married, which is an obvious tradition that even he cannot deny.

Considering such factors, King was depressed and was drenched in wine to overcome the political depression. It was at that moment when Ser Otto Hightower paid him a visit in his royal celebration tent.

Otto Hightower’s Proposal!

So far in the series, we are evident that Otto’s ambition is to see Aegon II, his grandson as the king. He said to Alicent, his daughter, that if a woman is to rule the Iron Throne, then the seven kingdoms would tear itself apart. He believed that Aegon II has the certain right to sit on Iron Throne, and he eventually will.

Otto also knew that King Viserys will not back down on his daughter after he has named her heir to the throne among everyone in the realm. So, to ensure that King doesn’t have to betray his own words, Otto proposes him to arrange a marriage ceremony for Rhaenyra and Aegon II.

To this proposal, King Viserys laughs out loud and says, “The boy just turned 2 Otto!”. The Hand of the King then suggests that getting her married to Aegon II, will eventually stop all the proposals that are flooding in, and he can be at peace. King went furious about it and said he is not here to spare time for such politics on the hunt.

And following that Otto stops talking about it at once and says, “We shall stop talking about it at once!”

What Good Will This Marriage Do?

With Aegon II marrying Rhaenyra, King will have no hesitation on naming his firstborn son as the heir to Iron Throne. In this way, Rhaenyra would still be the queen, and he won’t have to defy his words for her birth rights.

Imagine Viserys showing agreement to this proposal, Rhaenyra would have rebelled against this decision. Just because they are born from different mothers, doesn’t make it any less true that Aegon is her brother. King Viserys didn’t wanted to gain political advantage by mishandling Rhaenyra’s future.
