Paddy Considine, who played King Viserys Targaryen in House of the Dragon recently received a compliment from the creator of the Game of Thrones universe, George R. R. Martin. Fans will undoubtedly develop their own opinions and feedback about this fantastical history, but author George R.R. Martin is impressed, especially by the role of King Viserys Thanks to Paddy Considine.

George R. R. Martin lavished praise on House of the Dragon actor Paddy Considine for his portrayal of King Viserys, and Considine responded once he heard it for the first time. Right before the season finale of House of the Dragon, Paddy Considine appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and discussed this.

Paddy Considine, in a recent interview with GQ, shared a text message that he had received from George Martin. Martin lauded Considine’s protagonist Viserys Targaryen on HBO’s House of the Dragon. Viserys is the King of the seven kingdoms (Westeros), and he must rule his kingdom while balancing the Targaryen rivalry for the throne after his death.

In the message, George said, “For the record, the character he created for the show is so much more powerful and tragic and fully fleshed than my own version in Fire & Blood that I’m half tempted to go back and rip up those chapters and rewrite the whole history of his reign. Paddy deserves an Emmy for this episode alone. If he doesn’t get one, hey, there’s no justice.”

Looking at this text, the decision makers at Emmy would find themselves in a bit of a pickle when they discuss choosing the next ‘Best Actor Award’ for next year’s Emmy Awards. In fact, after Martin’s specific mention and Paddy Considine’s impeccable acting in House of the Dragon (until King Viserys’ dies at the end of HOTD episode 8).

In the interview with GQ Paddy Considine said, “I got a text message that simply said: ‘Your Viserys is better than my Viserys,” he continues to say, “It was from George R.R. Martin. And I thought: ‘That’ll do it. Thanks for trusting me.’”

Martin doesn’t only pay his respects using text messages. He has publicly stated that he considers Considine’s rendition of King Viserys superior to the one in Martin’s books.

“King Viserys Targaryen I, as portrayed by Paddy Considine on the show, is better than the way I wrote King Viserys in ‘Fire & Blood,’” Martin said. “He’s stronger, he’s still conflicted, but he’s more of a tragic figure. He has King Lear aspects to him, if I may dare [say] that, and that’s made his portrayal really interesting to watch in the show.”

Paddy Considine’s Character Compared To Fire & Blood

In Martin’s defence, House of the Dragon gets to concentrate more on King Viserys’ empire, whilst Martin was just not able to flesh out Viserys in his book Fire & Blood. Paddy Considine has done an excellent job, and the House of the Dragon cast has indeed been outstanding for the most part. They have exceeded Martin’s expectations, and we would expect some of the actors from this show to become household names in the future.
