Years before she was chosen for the lead role in Marvel’s Eternals, Angelina Jolie was being considered for a significant part in Sam Raimi’s planned Spider-Man 4.

Raimi felt cut off from the movie as a result of Spider-Man 3’s negative reviews and the drama that ensued behind the scenes. He had always planned to come back for a fourth movie and give the series what he believed would be a proper send-off. Although Sony ultimately took the decision to remove Raimi from the project. Numerous details about Raimi’s ambitious plans for Spidey’s fourth appearance have been made public.

What if, more than ten years ago, Sony Pictures had picked up the actress first and placed her into the universe of Tobey Maguire‘s Spidey? Even outside of the comic book movie genre, such a decision might have resulted in Jolie’s career taking a very different turn.

With Great Power, a Spider-Man book written by Sean O’Connell, has revealed new details about how Jolie was slated to play a significant part in Raimi’s projected send-off for the web-head. O’Connell claims that Jolie was expected to temporarily join the cast in a key role.

She would be in constant rivalry with both J.K. Simmons’ J. Jonah Jameson and Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker since Jolie’s position was that of an “accomplished executive representing a venture capital group” that was trying to buy the Daily Bugle. Jolie would have potentially become the Vultress.

Adrian Toomes’ daughter was supposed to take up the mantle as the terrifying Vultress—an original character who didn’t appear in the comics. Angelina Jolie was supposedly “connected to this important part for a short length of time” during Spider-Man 4’s production in 2009, which leads us to believe that she was the actress the studio had in mind for the shelved fourth movie.

Sam Raimi wanted Adrian Toomes to be more futuristic than how he typically appears in comic books. The villain’s attire reflected some of this, such as the way his wings’ feathers were “made to flip out like razor-sharp blades.”

Additionally, the filmmaker desired a sequence for the villain that matched the terrifying nature of Doc Ock’s prominent hospital scene. It would have taken the form of a fight scene with the Vulture and goons in a library; needless to say, it didn’t go well.

The villain would have acquired his name “because after he was finished, he didn’t leave anything except bones behind,” according to storyboard artist Jeffrey Henderson.

Sadly, Raimi’s original idea was never carried through. Sony denied a fourth movie in favor of a brand-new reboot, resulting in the production of The Amazing Spider-Man duology. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from 2022, Raimi did make a comeback to the superhero genre, and Tobey Maguire made a comeback as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
