After the immense success of Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse, Marvel and Sony are all set to bring their next animated installment – Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse Part 1 (2023). As is evident from the trailer, the highly anticipated movie shall feature Spiderman 2099. The character had previously appeared in a post-credit sequence in the prequel. So, which multiversal version of Spiderman is he, and what are his powers? Let’s see.

Spiderman 2099 Origins

Spiderman 2099

Having first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #365 (1962), Spiderman 2099 is a version of Spiderman from the future of an alternate universe (Earth-928). Originally created by Peter David and Rick Leonardi, this Spider-Man’s real name is Miguel O’Hara. An engineer of Irish and Mexican descent, Miguel is an engineer of Nueva York (a futuristic version of New York). He was born after his mother Conchata had an affair with her husband’s boss Tyler Stone. He was a genetic engineer genius and worked at Alchemax.

Under pressure from his work boss Tyler Stone (who unbeknownst to him was his biological father), Miguel ended up developing a process of splicing human DNA with different genetic codes. After several unsuccessful attempts of testing to on human subjects, he offered his resignation to Stone. But Stone offered him a drink laced with a highly addictive drug (Rapture). Since the company Alchemax was the only developer of the drug, Miguel got addicted to it and continued to work at the company. When Miguel had enough of it, he decided to try his genetic splicing process on himself to get rid of the addiction. This experiment ended up with Miguel gaining the powers of a spider. Ultimately he took on the mantle of Spider-Man 2099.

Spiderman 2099’s powers and suits

He has a distinctive look when compared with the other traditional look of variants. Featuring an all-black suit that shines blue under the light, the suit is fitted with a cape and a red logo on it, giving a futuristic feel and making him stand out from the rest of the Spider-Men.

As compared to other Spidermen, his powers are also a bit different. Apart from the usual special spider abilities (superhuman strength, superhuman agility, superhuman reflexes, and stamina), he possesses some really cool new abilities like telepathy, fangs, talons, and quite a good healing factor, thus making him a real force to be reckoned with.

Spider-Man 2099’s Role in Spiderverse

Miles in Spider-Man-Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 trailer

The post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse saw Miguel put on a special gadget that allowed him to hop to different universes. He, along with his A.I. Lyla, learns about the film’s events while building a watch that allows him to travel to different dimensions while maintaining molecular stability. He ultimately meets 1960s animated Spiderman. It was shown in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse that Dr. Olivia Octavius worked at Alchemax, which used to be funded by the Kingpin (Wilson Fisk) himself. It is also a possibility that the spider that bit Miles Morales belonged to Spiderman 2099’s reality because if one looks closely, one can see similar colored stripes over it. The spider was also glitching a bit as if it did not belong to this reality. Miguel in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 is voiced by amazing actor – Oscar Issac (of Marvel’s Moon Knight fame).

His speed allows him to dodge gunfire from a short distance away and move several times faster than a normal human being can. Miguel’s superhuman agility and dexterity allow him to perform complicated acrobatic and gymnastic maneuvers that would be impossible for even the most highly trained athlete and help him achieve and regain perfect balance even under extraordinary combat situations. However, Miguel does not possess an extra-sensory “spider sense” that warns him of oncoming threats. Instead, Miguel possesses enhanced vision and hearing, which the original Spider-Man does not have. He can see in complete darkness and can accurately perceive and see the people and objects that are a great distance away.

A brighter future?

Spiderman 2099 comics

With Sony’s attempts to build SPUMC (Sony Pictures of Marvel Characters) a big adventure, this could play a vital role. It is being rumored that apart from spidermen featured in the prequel, Spiderman India, and Spiderman 2099, animated versions of Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire’s spiderman will be featured as well. Apart from Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse Part 1, other movies to be rumored/confirmed to be in the pipeline are – Kraven, Silk, Madame Webb, and many more. If that is so, very soon, a good connection, and vast spider verse shall surely become a reality.

Miguel O’Hara aka Spiderman 2099’s debuts on big screen Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 worldwide on June 2, 2023.
