The sequel trilogy wasn’t well-received by many fans and critics. In fact, it can be said that the entire saga of fans being disappointed started with Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi. After all, many fans didn’t agree with the storytelling choices presented there as well as in the other sequel films.
But it will be wrong to say that everyone hated his Star Wars movie. There are many fans who did love his storytelling decisions in the movie and they love him irrespective of what others say.
As a result, Rian Johnson evokes intense emotions. Some fans love his Star Wars movies while others can’t stand him. So he is certainly a controversial figure (just like so many other Star Wars actors, directors, etc.)
However, Rian Johnson isn’t fazed by this fan division and neither is Disney or Lucasfilm it seems. After all, it was revealed in February that his Star Wars trilogy is indeed happening, albeit there isn‘t any fixed release date yet. But while we wait to see those movies, we would love to see him come back to direct the major Star Wars phenomenon right now- The Mandalorian.
In fact, Rian Johnson seems to be on the same page as us. He too wants to be a part of The Mandalorian.
Rian Johnson Wants To Direct Star Wars
In an interview with author Sariah Wilson, he said that directing an episode of the Mandalorian is on his personal bucket list. Wilson revealed this little detail on her Twitter. Along with this, she also shared why this hasn’t happened yet.
The main reason is time. But Rian has indeed talked to Dave Filoni and he even visited the set of the show during season 1. Wilson says that the main reason behind Johnson not being able to direct The Mandalorian is Knives Out 2. The development and production of the movie has kept him quite busy.
However, the fact that even then he took out the time to visit the season one set of The Mandalorian shows just how passionate he is about being a part of it. Also, it speaks volumes about how much he loves Star Wars in general as well.
In fact, we think that Dave Filoni may have let his friend let in on some show secrets as well. Who knows, maybe Johnson gave some ideas which could have made their way into the show as well. Here are what Wilson’s tweets say:
finding time to break away and do it. He said he has spoken to Dave Filoni about it. He had gone and visited the set during Season 1. He said it was so cool and I told him I was very jealous. He had seen "Baby Yoda" months before the reveal.
He said it was fascinating seeing

the way that they're shooting the show. He asked if I'd seen BTS stuff (of course I have).
He said when he was standing there in that space and they did the thing where they moved the camera and the perspective on the screen shifted he said he almost fell over. You get vertigo.

Knives Out Show That Rian Johnson Is An Amazing Director
As for Knives Out, this film is proof of Rian Johnson’s directing prowess and how good of a storyteller he is. With the right material, he can truly shine. So, no doubt that with The Mandalorian, he will do an amazing job.
Also, we must say that there were a lot of background issues with the sequel trilogy as well. One major issue was that there was just no concrete roadmap about it. But the opposite is the case with The Mandalorian. Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau have created a show which has been developed amazingly. In fact, it has been developed so well that now there are spin-off shows that are now in development!
Rian Johnson Could Direct An Episode Of The Spin-offs
Now, we know that The Mandalorian season 3 has already started production. So since Rian Johnson hasn‘t been able to break away from his movie, so this means that he won’t be able to direct an episode of the show this season.
But if The Mandalorian gets renewed for season 4, then maybe he can sit on the director’s chair. Also, maybe the opportunity to direct a Star Wars show will present itself in another form to Johnson. After all, there are so many other spin-off shows that are currently in development that Johnson can direct.
But no matter what Star Wars show he directs, we just hope to see him in the director’s chair of one. We hope that he directs an episode of The Mandalorian, but directing any of the spinoff shows will also make us happy. After all, he is one of the best directors in the business.
