The debate over the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its position in movies continues, as more celebrities respond to Quentin Tarantino’s latest remarks on the studio and how moviegoers attend to see the superheroes, not the actors who play them.

After Simu Liu and Samuel L. Jackson responded to the “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” director’s statements, “Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. became the most recent actor to address the criticism.

In an interview, Robert Downey Jr. discussed Quentin Tarantino’s harsh remarks regarding the comic book movie genre, as well as how he sees it all in general.

He said, “… I believe our perspectives on these issues reveal a lot about us. I believe we are in a time and place, to which I unintentionally contributed, when intellectual property has gained precedence over principles and individuality. However, it is a double-edged sword. A piece of intellectual property is only as good as the human talent that represents it, and you can have some great IP even if it’s coming from an auteur or a national treasure of a writer or director, but if you don’t have the right kind of artist playing that role, you’ll never know how good it could have been.”

“I believe that being at conflict with ourselves is a waste of time in terms of creativity.” I believe this is a moment when everything is so splintered that you have this kind of bifurcation. In one way or another, throwing stones… and I’ve had my reactions in the past when individuals said things that I thought questioned my integrity… I said, “You know what? Let’s just move on.” We’re all part of a group. Thank goodness for Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water. That’s all I have to say about it. “To make room for films like Armageddon Time, we need the big stuff.”

Attack On MARVEL

Martin Scorsese

MCU films, according to Martin Scorsese, are “not cinema,” and Dune director Denis Villeneuve sees them as little more than “copy and paste.” Even James Cameron seems to think the characters aren’t realistic enough because “they never hang up their spurs because of their kids,” despite the fact that it’s been brought up previously.

In response to the preceding claims, Tom Holland stated that comic book films and Oscar nominees are “all the same, just done on a different scale,” and that both are “true art.” He also mentioned how someone like Martin Scorsese has no idea what it’s like to work on a Marvel film because he’s never worked on one.

James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the new co-lead of the DC Universe, stated that “it seems terribly cynical that he would continually come out against Marvel.”
