In the MCU, Elizabeth Olsen’s performance as Wanda Maximoff has made her a hugely popular character. Since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron as Scarlet Witch, the actress has worked on five more films with Marvel, the most recent of which is Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
It’s not just Olsen who’s made multiple appearances in the MCU. Multi-film contracts are common for big studio franchises, and Marvel is no exception. He signed a ten-film deal with Marvel Studios for his role as Nick Fury.
It’s hard to predict when Marvel’s actors will be called back to play their characters again, as the Marvel universe continues to expand in new and unexpected ways.
Even though Elizabeth Olsen’s original contract only covered two films and a cameo, she’s been extending her deal whenever Marvel has a new story for Wanda to appear in since then. Olsen recently spoke about the status of her Marvel contract after completing her sixth Marvel appearance.
Elizabeth Olsen addressed speculation that her Marvel contract would be extended beyond her most recent appearance at the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness press event.
Olsen claims that her contract is “constantly adjusting” and that she signs “extensions every time they want [her] to do a movie”. It’s still not clear to her if this is the end of her relationship with Marvel:
“I sign extensions every time they want me to do a movie. I just signed a very short one at the beginning, so everything’s constantly just, it’s always adjusting for me. No. I don’t think of this either as the end.”
It’s unclear how Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will make an MCU return after the conclusion of Multiverse of Madness.
“I don’t know in what capacity I’ll be back. I don’t know how to do it without, I don’t want spoilers.”
The House of M comic book plotline was also brought up by the actress, to which she replied, “Why can’t Wanda be with the X-Men?:”
“Someone just said, ‘because you’re bringing in X-Men, Wanda’s a part of the X-Men franchise. Why can’t Wanda be there too?’ In my mind I’m like, ‘Yeah. Why can’t Wanda be with the X-Men too?'”
When asked where Wanda could go next, Olsen said, “I don’t know, but if there’s a great idea, I’ll be there.”
“I have no idea. I don’t know what I want. I know I want it to matter. There’s no reason to continue to tell these stories unless they’re really strong, good stories, and that they’re adding something to the entirety of the MCU. I will be there if there’s a great idea.”
The Scarlet Witch’s fate in the Multiverse of Madness was unclear at the end of Doctor Strange. As long as she hasn’t agreed to a multi-project deal with Marvel, Olsen’s future appearances as Wanda Skarsgard aren’t a given if the studio wants to bring her back.
Olsen is clearly eager to get back to her role as Wanda, and there are numerous opportunities for her character to appear in the future. WandaVision left Paul Bettany’s White Vision’s story unfinished, and the actress has said she would like to see the two characters reunite on screen.
Marvel fans are eager to see the House of M come to fruition. Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, has validated that mutants will appear in the MCU, but he has not said when or how.
According to Olsen, the MCU could benefit from the introduction of an iconic X-Men line. With her appearance in both the Avengers and Mutant franchises in comic books, it would make sense for the Scarlet Witch to appear in future Mutant stories.
