Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. are known for their fantastic chemistry and dynamic performances in the MCU. However, fans might be surprised to learn that they were almost cast in the $723 million Academy Award-nominated film, Gravity, which ultimately went to Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.

Casting Challenges For Gravity

Gravity

Before filming began for Gravity, the filmmakers faced several roadblocks in the casting process. Angelina Jolie was initially interested in the movie but dropped out, leading to the testing of actresses such as Marion Cotillard and Scarlett Johansson. Only Scarlett Johansson was shortlisted to play the role of Ryan Stone, the stranded astronaut in the film. Later, Blake Lively’s name was also considered for the role, becoming a competitor of the Black Widow actress. However, neither of them were able to secure the role, which ultimately went to Sandra Bullock.

After his success in the MCU, Robert Downey Jr. was in high demand by filmmakers, including Alfonso Cuarón, who directed Gravity. However, the Iron Man actor missed out on the film due to his dislike for the working conditions, specifically the excessive use of CGI. In an interview with The Howard Stern Show, Downey stated that the film was too tech-heavy and the working conditions were too troublesome for him to handle.

Although fans might wonder how the film would have been with Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr. in the lead roles, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s performances in Gravity ultimately earned them Oscar recognition. Casting choices can be subjective, but in this case, it seems like everything worked out for the best.
